Islamic food was never top on my “must-have list”, mostly because I never really know what they are... A few years ago a friend of mine introduced me to this place, and I have not stopped coming back since!

Islamic dietary law specifies that their food (meat) must be Halal which, although similar, is different from kosher. Halal and kosher have similar descriptions in which animals are allowed to be consumed and which are forbidden; there seems to be stricter requirements for kosher then halal. Another difference is in the method used for the slaughter of animal, but let’s not get into details of that here.

In my experience there is always a line waiting to get in here, but we never had to wait for too long, the turning rate of their seats is quite high. We got our seats after about 10 mins; for those who hasn’t been here before, it’s likely that you will be sharing a table with strangers unless you are with a large enough group to take up a whole table. It can be quite interesting at times, because you will be forced to hear all kinds of crazy stories told by other diners sharing the table. It’s fun!

Immediately after seating we started with the legendary beef patty/beef cakes, I have no hesitation in calling it the Best in Hong Kong! Their beef cakes are always served boiling hot, with an unbelievable amount of juice inside (there’s so much I sometimes just called it soup!). The beef patties were marinated in an addictively delicious flavor that leaves you wanting more~ I could not get enough of it!

Another signature dish here is curry beef brisket, I would order this almost every time I came here. Slow cooked, super tender beef brisket soaked in rich spicy curry sauce with soft potato chucks, pure yummy goodness.

One of my friend said she actually prefer this beef dumpling soup over the beef cakes! It tasted like they use the same magically marinated beef for dumplings and beef cakes, the soup base kept it moist and soft. This is great too but I still prefer my beef cakes~

Trying the curry samosa for the first time, this was the only dish that was not outstanding. They came very hot, like it just got out of the deep frying pan! The curry sauce was just as good as curry beef brisket; the outside was fried crispy and flaky~ the only thing to make it perfect is to have a bit more filling and maybe a thinner/ fewer layers of the wrapping.

I love hot and sour soups! However, traditional hot and sour soup usually contains “pork skin” as one of the ingredients, which I hated. Islam Food does not serve anything that contains pork, and therefore making it one of my favorite places for hot and sour soup! Their hot and sour soup were usually not sour enough for me, but there would always be vinegar just sitting on the table for me to make it whichever way I please!

My favorite thing about this restaurant is they consistency: you can always expect the same line of people waiting outside; the same addicting flavors I crave; the same rushing feeling of their staff trying to get food on tables; and interestingly, the high proportion of diners getting large numbers of beef cake takeaways after their meal.

There is no question that I will keep coming back, and I can only hope they survive in Hong Kong’s expensive rent and keep providing us the same legendary beef cakes forever!
