Saizeriya is a chain restaurant from Japan offering inexpensive Japanese style Italian food. With branches all over Hong Kong, I have always seen long queues of people waiting to eat. Boyfriend told me that it was nasty but I was curious. It couldn't be that bad could it? I had a coworker who quite enjoyed the place. So, after a bit of mumbling, boyfriend decided one day to bring me here to shut up me.We went to the location near his home and a table was easy to get as it wasn't too busy as not
We went to the location near his home and a table was easy to get as it wasn't too busy as not many know of this location.
The menu is colorful with many photos. It's in English and Chinese. Prices are truly inexpensive with everything under $50. You can even add $12 for access to the all you can drink area. We did this. There was a pretty decent choice of drinks from soft drinks to coffee to tea.
Boyfriend subsequently ordered a whole slew of items as he said serving sizes were small. Ordering is done by pushing a button found on the table. Payment is made by walking yourself out of to the cashier area. There is no 10% service charge.
Seafood Chowder ($10). Boyfriend ordered this soup. It was ok. Tasted like the powdered stuff you get from those Japanese soup packs.
Cream Corn Soup ($10). I chose this soup. It tasted like the powdered soup versions I sometimes buy from the Japanese soup packs for those moments at work when I want a quick snack. I thought it was fine and for $10, I really couldn't complain.
Grilled Spicy Chicken Wings (4 for $17). Not too spicy but the wings were rather dry. It seemed these were way overcooked.
Grilled Squid with Garlic Sauce ($28). This was surprisingly pretty good. The squid was soft and tender. It wasn't overcooked at all. The garlic sauce was a bit salty but it went well with the squid.
Pizza with Bacon, Pineapple and Sausages ($32). This was an eight inch pizza and literally came like they put two different toppings one each side. A half and half pizza in one. It looked pretty scary but it wasn't horrible. The crust tasted strange. It was more like a cracker. Boyfriend said it was one of those pre-bought pizza doughs. Other than that, the amount of toppings was generous enough. It was a pretty good combination of flavors.
Meat Doria ($27). This was really tasty. The bolognese sauce was rich. The rice was not hard or watery but soaked in the meat sauce well.
Rigatoni with Chicken ($29). This I didn't like quite as much as the doria. The pasta was a bit hard to chew. There wasn't enough sauce or perhaps it had dried out?
With all that we ordered, I was pretty full and it only cost us $177 in total. The food wasn't fantastic but it wasn't as bad as boyfriend described it to be. Super cheap and filling. A definite value for money. Don't expect excellent quality but it is filling and quite edible. I would be back but I doubt boyfriend will amuse me again.
