I met boyfriend here for dinner as he said he wanted to give it a try. It was pretty popular with a long wait line.San Fen Su Qi, located in San Po Kong, serves Shanghai food. The restaurant looks more like a cha chan teng in decor. You order by checking off items from a check off type menu. Menu is in Chinese only and there is no 10% service charge. We obviously ordered way too much food. We thought that items would be small but apparently, these were huge portions.
Wanted to note the tea we received. I thought it was funny they gave us two different size cups. But the same amount of tea!
Pan fried pork buns ($36). The wrapping was too thick and doughy and it was a bit dried out inside with not much juices. It was pretty oily.
Braised Beancurd ($30). Usually a favorite, these were super tough. I had a hard time chewing it and it mostly was left untouched.
Xiao Long Bao ($36). These were quite possibly the worst xiao long bao I've ever had in a long long time. Not only was the skin thick, there wasn't any soup in them. How is this possible?
Red Bean Pancakes ($35). These were also a disappointment. Not enough red bean filling. The wrapping was also thick and doughy.
Stir Fried Beef and Leek ($58). This fared much better. The beef was tender and the leeks were cooked to a nice sweet taste. It wasn't too salty.
Rice Cakes with Pork ($68). This was pretty huge and we didn't expect it. Actually, all the dishes were fairly big so we had leftovers that we took home. I liked it this dish but boyfriend wasn't too thrilled over it. The rice cakes were soft and had that chewiness that is found in rice cakes. The sauce tasted like black bean sauce and so the pork tasted like a black bean spare ribs dish. I liked it enough.
Portions are generous but the food wasn't very good. Some was ok but not great. I wouldn't return again.
