I intended to visit this cafe last sunday, and it was full when I arrived at about 2pm Try my luck again today, which was a rainy weekday. We were the only cusomters when we reached at 11:30am. The colourful yet simple paintings on the wall reminded me of my childhood- I used to draw on the wall of my home. Home is always the place where I could be childish.
The cafe was small- I supposed it could cater at most 20 customers. The kitchen was semi-open. The ventilation was good. I sat at the innermost table but it was not stuffy.
Menu
There were three of us, and we ordered and shared three sets (The sandwich, the pasta and the cake sets). Food
Cheddar Cheese and Ham Sandwich ($60- set)
Noticing there were three of us, the owner asked if we would like the sandwich to be cut into three portions, and warned that each portion would be rather small. It turned out that the portion of the sandwich was not as small as I expected. The bread was warm and was not hard or chewy. It was soft with a light crispy crust. I thought the cheese would be melted- but it wasn't. It was quite brittle. This piece of pale yellowish chadder was thicker and firmer than those packeted sandwich cheese you see in supermarket. Quite nice. The ham and the veggie were fine. It seemed that they did not apply salad dressing? Sounded a bit healthier
Daily pasta: Salmon linguine ($75- set)
The smoked salmon was soft and deliciously seasoned. The linguine was firm, lightly chewy and smooth. The menu emphasized that its daily pasta was cooked with olive oil- feeling less guilty . Homemade cake: Grapefruit mousse cake ($50- set)
There were two choices of homemade cake today- blueberry cheesecake and grapefruit mousse cake. The latter sounded less common and hence the choice. As you could see, there were several layers in the cake, with a thin glassy yellow jelly as the toppest layer and chiffon cake as the base. The chiffon cake was a bit rough. The mousse was lightly sour and had a decent grapefruit taste. This dessert was particularly refreshing after the (olive-ly) oily linguine.
Beverages
For each set, you may choose coffee/tea or soup or both. Today's soup was tomato with red chilli- not interested. Hence we went for coffee and chocolate. As the set only included house coffee, we agreed to an extra $5 for an upgrade.
Cream Brulee Cafe Latte (Set +$5)
Very curious- could hardly imagine how this combination could work. This cup of cream brulee latte was served in a lake green cup with a delicately drawn latte art.It did not smell cream brulee. When I took the first sip, it tasted like a normal cup of smooth latte. However after swollowing the sip, there was a subtle taste of burnt caramel and custard- pretty interesting. Vanilla White Chocolate (Set +$5)
This was D's chocolate, and she opined it tasted like hot milk, but creamier and sweeter. Cappuccino
This was T's cappuccino. It was so frothy that the foam nearly spilt out of the cup. Yet T was expecting a big brown ring around the foam- as shown in other's open rice photos. Tasted very ordinary. Summary/Next
The drinks were served slowly- they were served some time after we finished the sandwich and the pasta. Nonetheless we reminded ourselves that we were here to chill and relax. We stayed here for two hours. Seemed that the owners did not mind. Would visit again when I wish to find a nice chatting place.
p.s. Saw this sign in their washroom- something that is true but sad, yet would make you smile when you read it
