having missed the lunch hour, therefore viable lunch sets, we changed plans and decided to get some chinese food. having missed the lunch hour, therefore viable lunch sets, we changed plans and decided to get some chinese food. I have been wanting to try this place, having walked by during times where I've seen people lining up. I'd also like to mention this place advertises itself as MSG free! Exactly what I want after the recent MSG overload at soho...
We walked in to find the restaurant empty and the staff seemed to be resting I'm guessing from the lunch rush, but they were friendly enough to have us seated quickly in the pretty small restaurant (I think this place has more seating upstairs).

We decided on:
A mixed vegetable, vermicelli and squid hotpot $52
This arrived in a bowl and when the waiter removed the lid I was slightly disappointed. I have had similar dishes in many cha chan-teengs, but this didn't look remotely like what I had. First of all, the sauce was thick - clearly quite a bit of cornstarch has been used. Secondly, it was more sauce than ingredients - there was not even half the bowl of vegetables and vermicelli, plus only had a couple squid tentacles.... In my experience, I think there should be more generous amount of vermicelli and vegetables if they're going to charge $52. I don't want a pot of sauce thank you very much!

A bowl of Red rice $15
The rice was not good nor particularly bad... I would prefer to have my rice less cooked - i.e. less water. The rice was all 'broken'. At $15 a bowl in this restaurant was also in my opinion quite expensive!

Fried Noodles with Chicken and Veggies $44
This dish came pretty quickly. The noodles were fresh-fried, very crispy and tasty but not in a salty or unhealthy way! The chicken was however, wasn't very good - I believe they used thigh meat, but it wasn't tender enough. I would also prefer if they had thinly sliced the chicken - much easier to eat with the noodles!

The menu was extensive so we might have not ordered their best dishes. I liked the fact that they did not serve oily dishes, and their service was generally pretty good. An example would be this man offering a bucket for me to pour the tea which I washed the utensils with, and then when I spilled it he kindly gave me tissues and helped me mop up the mess!
