Tap the Ale Project is one of the rare bars in Hong Kong that are very serious about their beer. No ... you won't find the regular Bud or Calsberg here. What you will find is craft beer. Craft Beer? Beer is beer, right? To those that love beer, not two beers are the same. Craft beers are created by small, independent breweries that brew small batches of beer. These beers are not mass produced. Each of these companies combine their own flavors and style, creating a totally different beer. Craft beers have become very popular over the past few years all over the world with recent additions found in the local Hong Kong market. Tap the Ale Project serves many brands of craft beer. Some in bottles and a lot on tap. I think they have one of the most extensive list of on tap beer in Hong Kong at the moment. I could be wrong. But in the Kowloon area, let alone Mong Kok, this is a rare find as most places that serve craft beer is more commonly found in the areas of Hong Kong where ex-pats frequent.

Menu is in the form of a clipboard. It's in both English and Chinese.

Young Masters Classic Pale Ale ($60 for 0.4 L). You can choose four different sizes: 0.2L, 0.4L, 2L and a 2L to go size. Boyfriend chose a Young Masters which is a local Hong Kong brand as he had never tried it and was curious and stuck with a classic pale ale. There was a slight hint of citrus and not too bitter in taste. He thought it was ok.

Cold Brew Nitro Coffee ($50). As I really don't like drinking alcohol, I chose my phoney alcoholic drink of choice ... coffee. This was served via nitro press method and had a nice foamy top to resemble beer. So I didn't feel out of place among the beer gluggers around me. It was slightly bitter with a creamy feel to it. Tasted like a beer.

Crispy Cajun Chicken Wings With Fermented Tofu Ranch ($58). For cajun, these weren't very spicy. But they were very crunchy and a bit on the salty side. The fermented tofu ranch was actually pretty good. It was thick and it did taste like fermented tofu but not so strong that it would over power everything. These were really good to go with beer.

Mix and Match ($58). We wanted to try the famous beer bread and couldn't decide on which of the toppings to choose from so we chose all three in mini form versions. Mix and match comes with fancy toast, pintxo de antxoa and lap cheong schmear. The one in the front is the fancy toast which was butter, brie and honey. It was very sweet and salty at the same time and something I usually make for myself. The one on the right is the pintxo de antoxa which is green olive relish with some boquerones. I wasn't a big fan of the tiny fish so this wasn't my favorite from the mix and match. The last one on the back left is the lap cheong schmear. This was my favorite as it tasted just like Chinese sausage made into a pate. But the thing I liked best is the beer bread. The bread was moist with the right amount of chewiness. It was fragrant and just really really good bread.

Siu Yuk Cubano ($78). You can also order a half portion if you want but we stuck with sharing a full portion. This was basically a pressed sandwich with siu yuk, ham, Chinese pickles and cheese all on a tangy sweet hoisin mustard. It was an interesting east meets west sandwich. Everything was crispy and crunchy. I could have done with a bit more cheese.

Some of the food was ok. But the beer was the star in this establishment so all the food did go with the a glass of beer. A nice place to choose if hanging with friends for a drink and some snacks.
