Just went there for lunch and overall good safe bet for tasty soup dumplings and shanghainese/taiwanese food. --The string beans came with bits of salty ground pork - and of course they were tasty, however partly due to the fact they were deep fried in oil first before. For more health-conscious ppl, I'd suggest ordering one of their veggie dishes over soup.
--The crab soup dumplings were amazing, you could really taste and see the crab - plus there was just enough soup. The skin and everything is done so well, that it is almost impossible to break these dumplings. I'd definitely recommend the crab ones over the regular pork ones - the flavor is just top notch and cannot be found in the other soup dumpling houses. You can order both to compare...but the pork ones will end up tasting bit bland in comparison, not saying they're not good on their own.
--The vegetarian dumplings were good too, the filling was very generous with mushroom flavor more distinct.
--The hot & sour soup was literally filled with the usual stuff and had a very good consistency - not too thick or watery. Its not spicy at all - so I guess it suits more Southern chinese palates. Every spoon was filled with the goodies - so this was very yummy, drank it to the last drop.
--The shrimp and egg fried rice was really good. They don't use the long grain jasmine rice, they use more the shorter plump rice used for those gluttinous rice (sorry not very familiar with rice types). It came with loads of peeled medium sized shrimp and bits of yellow egg and chives. Although there is quite a bit of oil (I guess necessary to make a good fried rice), it tasted very light. I am more a fried rice fan than a noodles fan, and I think fried rice just hits the spot/craving better.
Service: Great service - they speak/understand both cantonese and mandarin and even english. Easy to order since the menu item #s match this little ticket you mark down. I'd recommend going off-peak hours to avoid the wait. The wait can be very brutal.
Decor: Felt very spacious, high ceilings, light coming through from glass windows. And of course you can look at their dumpling kitchen and watch the chefs make the dumplings and buns. Makes me feel better in regards to hygiene.
Sizing it up: Compared to the other popular soup dumpling places -- Crystal Jade and Xiao Nan Guo, I'd rank Din Tai Fung first. Crystal Jade's soup dumplings are too fatty and heavy for my taste. And I prefer the menu variety in Din Tai Fung and also the bit more casual atmosphere here (as compared to Xiao Nan Guo, which sometimes may be too stiff). Comparing across its branches...(I've been to Shanghai; Beijing; Taiwan), they do reproduce consistent flavor across, my personal rankings: Taiwan; Beijing and HK tie; and then lastly Shanghai.
Enjoy, I'd recommend of course the soup dumplings and anything with their crab stuff on it like tofu with crab or any vegetables with the crab stuff. Go off peak hours to get a more peaceful dining experience!
