This was my first visit to the Central branch - I had been to the CWB branch many years ago and throught it was over-priced and so-so. So I reluctantly agreed to meet my friend for lunch at the Central branch. I arrived first and was pleasantly surprised by the deco - it looked like I had stepped back in time to the 1950s or 60s. There is a lot of choice for lunch - swiss sauce chicken wings, stir fried beef ho fun and several of their signature dishes. We went for the beef ho fun (normal type as swiss sauce is too sweet) and king prawn curry. We had the borsch soup which was very good and filling with the sweet bread. It was a very generous serving and we were half full after it already. The king prawn curry tasted exactly like how my parents made it at their takeaway shop in the UK many years ago and there were 6 king prawns - not shimps but proper king prawns. The beef ho fun was good and tasted as it should be. Liked that they served it with some choy sum. They served Chinese tea and also the beverage of your choice (cofee / tea etc) which was included in the set. Most of the sets are around $100 each which considering a rice box from the fast food outlets is $40 plus makes it excellent value for money for the quality and amount of food you get.
Service was very attentive - you know that the waiters have been there many years - there is a certain level of professionism that is really appreciated. You can see that they care and take pride in their jobs. Loyalty restaurant which opened nearby last year tries to emulate Tai Ping Koon but it has a long way to go and TPK wins hands down. It was a big eye-opening visit for me and I will certainly be back again!
