I was early for dinner at St. George in Hullett House, so my wife and I decided to sit down at the outdoor terrace at DG cafe. The setting was very nice and even though it was cool (around 12 degrees) the cafe had installed outdoor heaters for the comfort of their customers.

We only ordered a couple of coffees and we were the only table occupied in the cafe which seemed odd for a Saturday night. We had chosen a table right next to the heater and had nudged slowly towards the heater as the temperature dropped. An astute front of house Italian (?) gentlemen noticed our movement and asked us if we wanted to turn up the heater which we agreed to and he did so accordingly. The coffees arrived and provided a lovely setting overlooking 1881.

Suddenly we noticed that the flame had dropped to about a third of its size, we turned it back up accordingly at which point a local waiter came rushing out and asked us not to tun it up as the gas would run out more quickly! I told her that the heater was for our use and my wife was cold and that we had turned it up because the low setting was not warm enough. She repeated her concern that it would run out more quickly if turned up to which i suggested to her that they replace the LPG gas as and when it did run out but that it was cold and that I would not be turning it down.

Flustered she left the scene and returned soon with the captain, another local female. This 'captain', the type in a black suit repeated her demand for us to turn it down or they would run out of gas, refusing to accept the fact that my wife was cold and that the heater was there for our use. She then made up another excuse from the top of her head and said that the high setting was a fire hazard! I told her to stop making up lies and that if the cafe wanted to save money on fuel they should either not offer the heater or seat people indoors. I offered to blow out my candle tea light so that the wick would also last longer. She then stuck her nose in the air and said 'well do what you want then' and left.

I have never encountered such cheapness nor rudeness in this kind of establishment. The other heaters were all on and yet we were the only table present. It stands to reason that their low occupancy is probably due to the rudeness of their staff and their desire to save a few dollars whilst letting their customers freeze.

What a crock.

Needless to say I will never go back. DG really did stand for Dogs and Garbage on this occasion.
