I have heard so much talk about this place having the best burgers that I have been wanting to go for a while but haven't had the chance until now.We couldn't find the entrance at first, though we could clearly see the restaurant. It turns out the entrance to the lift is inside the Pizza Express which occupies the ground and first floors while Beef & Liberty is on the 2nd floor. The space is airy with huge ceilings but the tables are so closely packed together that I felt I was on a double date

My companion and I ordered drinks, skipped the appetizers and went straight for the burgers. My companion ordered a lamb burger well done and I ordered the black pepper burger medium rare.
The chocolate milkshake was tasty and very thick, real American style rather than the watery one usually served in Hong Kong.
My burger looked great, the bun was fluffy and the patty was nice and thick which usually means a great juicy burger. But it tasted burnt and wasn't juicy at all, I was really disappointed. I wasn't sure what had the burnt taste, the bread, the patty or the onion jam. The onion jam was odd tasting and didn't go well with the peppercorn seasoning. Usually the black pepper is a crust on the outside and you can taste the meat on the inside but in this patty there were just too many peppercorns mixed in and I couldn't taste the meat at all.
Maybe I should have just stuck to a regular burger because despite all the flaws, the burger wasn't bad, just far far away from being the best in Hong Kong. Honestly you can get the same level of burger for half the price at other places.
My companion liked the lamb burger but thought it was just average. It tasted similar to a lamb kebab roll. Personal aside, why can't a lamb burger be seasoned just like a beef burger, why do chefs feel the need to make it middle eastern tasting just because it is lamb?
The regular fries it came with had no seasoning but had a good texture, thick but not mushy at all. The cajun aioli sauce to dip the fries in was delicious. The ketchup on the table was an English brand I hadn't heard of and was very sweet. The sweet potato fries also had no seasoning and were pretty standard.
The dessert was a warm skillet cookie with cream. This was definitely the highlight of the meal. It was thick and soft with huge gooey chocolate chunks and drowned with as much cream as you want.
Overall the place is ok, but I would not come back as there are better, cheaper burger places within walking distance.
