Ahh...dim sum. I love it. And I guess everyone else had the same idea to do this, too, on Chinese New Year. Meeting boyfriend and his mother and sister for dim sum, it seemed all the places around Wong Tai Sin was packed so we grabbed a number and waited. As it was Chinese New Year, they had some Chinese New Year items and increased the prices a bit for the regular items. As it was Chinese New Year, they had some Chinese New Year items and increased the prices a bit for the regular items. Menu is mostly in Chinese but they have the basics in English and Chinese. Ordering is in the form of marking off a piece of paper much like a multiple choice test.
Little did I know, the dim sum would be served so creatively.
This is the beef tripe on a sizzling hot plate. Yes, it was served on a hotplate but there was also lined with aluminum foil. So, you really only get six pieces of beef tripe and one long slice of daikon. The beef tripe was pretty good. It sauce was very savory and the tripe was soft from braising.
We also ordered chicken feet, steamed sponge cake, fried chicken soft bone and a new year's item: shrimp gold fish dumplings. The chicken feet said it was in some sort of special golden sauce. I'm unsure what that was but it tasted like regular braised chicken feet. The sponge cake was strangely flat and overly chewy. The soft bone was also soggy and not crispy enough. And the new year's special dim sum of shrimp gold fish? It was ok. The shrimp was fresh and the wrapping was thin and held together well.
This was a claypot char siu bun. Yup. It arrived in a tiny claypot. The staff then poured rice wine around the edges and then left.
After we removed the lid, there were three char siu buns on top of a layer of onions. The bun was pretty good The bread was soft and sweet. The char siu had a lot of extra sauce to make it extra savory and moist.
The cheese and shrimp spring rolls caught our eye and when it arrived, it looked like this. We were a bit taken aback. Sadly, they weren't very good. There wasn't any shrimp or if there was, it was minimal. The cheese they used was the processed white cheeses like the ones found in Laughing Cow or brands similar to that. The cheese didn't stretch and it tasted clumpy.
A neighbourhood style dim sum restaurant. Boyfriend said it was popular even if it wasn't the new year. So, I guess it's one of the better ones around this area. At least they tried to make creative looking dim sum.
