In Quarry Bay, there is a really interesting looking cafe. It's all blue. Well, on the outside. When boyfriend asked where to have lunch, I said here. I was curious. It was blue, my favorite color. What did it look like inside???It was narrow inside but not blue. It was, yes, much as the shop's name, it is like a cave.Menu is in English and Chinese. As any new cafe, I like to test out the coffee. I ordered a Flat white ($40), my usual choice. You get a choice of nutty or fruity so I chose nutty. The latte art was beautiful. Temperature was good and the ratio of milk to espresso was good. A slight nuttiness could be detected. A really good cup of coffee.
While I was more tempted over cake, boyfriend wanted something my filling. He orderded the BBC ($108). A beef, beer and chocolate stew. The menu said they used Valrohona chocolate. It was nice and added to the smoothness of the gravy. You could also really taste the beer. The beef was braised so long, it literally melted in my mouth. The carrots were sweet and soaked up all the juices. It was served with a nicely poached egg and a side of rice.
I was interested in cake but while I was waiting for boyfriend to finish his lunch so I could have cake, I ordered a scone. This is a Black Onyx ($34). I added $12 for with jam and clotted cream. The scone was black and had bits of candied orange and a hint of Grand Mariner. Very buttery and soft.
But what I wanted most was The Azurite ($98). This is served after 2:30 pm so I was in for a treat! A cheesecake made from fermented tofu. It looked beautiful with all the colors that made it look like a planet. The crumbs of granola made it look like it was smashed. Great plating. The cheesecake itself was so creamy and smooth. A slightly salty taste. And then slowly the taste of the fermented tofu hits you. Just slightly. This was wonderful and worth returningfor.
A nice cozy cafe. It wasn't too noisy. Food was decent and the coffee was good. So many times have I been to far too many cafes where it's all superficial and the coffee is often forgotten. Not this place. Glad it's still the star. Will be back.
