Since I had some free time today at work, I decided to call up a friend and explore some new eats. My friend recommended this restaurant and ensured me that it was all worth it even though there was some distance between my work place and here. Without prior notice of what restaurant it maybe, I was surprised to see how packed this local noodle shop was at 2:10pm on a weekday (lunch hour should be way over by then). Without prior notice of what restaurant it maybe, I was surprised to see how packed this local noodle shop was at 2:10pm on a weekday (lunch hour should be way over by then). We waited patiently for about 8 minutes and finally got a spot sitting with a bunch of other patrons.
My friend ordered for me and she said the buttered sandwiched was to die for. SHE WAS RIGHT! We split a sandwich (there must have been 500 calories worth of butter in there) and it was delicious! The toast wasn’t just hot and crunch with 2 slices of melting cold butter in between, but it had condensed milk which made the whole thing 100x better! It had that flowery sweetness to it that brings you back to old vintage HK in the 80's.
My friend also ordered this beef brisket with sliced fish cake noodle for me and said it was the store’s specialty. At first, the soup came first and I liked it a lot because of the green onions and rich flavor. However, I started getting very thirsty afterwards so I knew MSG must have played a large role in the taste. When the noodles came, I was surprised at the color of the egg noodles because it has been previously mixed with dark soy sauce already. The portion was decent (for a girl) and it wasn’t bad. The beef briskets were soft and the noodles were soft by chewy. I rarely eat sliced fish cakes so I really can’t compare how well it tasted, but I think this one was okay—not bad. Basically, it's a nice bowl of noodle and everything is above average--nothing to complain about
Finally, I completed the meal with a nice hot cup of HK milk tea. I enjoy milk tea tasting in HK because I used to work for a local Chinese restaurant back in CDN and learned how to make this, and trust me, it is very VERY difficult to make a good cup of milk tea The milk tea was rich and very comfortable, but it wasn't smooth enough--lacked that aromatic milky touch to it. I still liked it and for a nice easy weekday lunch, the meal was good enough for me.
Overall, if I'm in the area, I'll definitely go back but I probably wouldn't cab there on purpose just for their noodles (unless I suddenly have enough quota to splurge and can order a whole butter sandwich to myself )
