Whenever we are bored with the restaurants that we keep going to, we venture to Kowloon City. That is where there are lots of good restaurants to choose from and that is a bit adventurous for us. Last night, we decided to drive all over the area to find somewhere we had never been to. If we didn't find anything interesting, we would go to Moslem Beef restaurant. It was already 9:20p.m. when we arrived and on the last street that we visited, right next to the Regal Hotel, there were 2 Thai restau
It was already 9:20p.m. when we arrived and on the last street that we visited, right next to the Regal Hotel, there were 2 Thai restaurants and 2 Chiu Chow restaurants. The Chiu Chow restaurants looked really old and were small and basic in decor but they had some big soya goose wings in the window. My husband decided to go and buy some even though we didn't want to have dinner there. Of the 2 Thai restaurants, one was nicely decorated, big but had only one table of diners. The other was smaller, cosy and was full even at that hour, so we picked the popular one.
There were lots of photos and recommendations on the wall and we ordered:
A small pot of Tom Yum soup. This was packed with all the right flavours, galanga, lemon leave, lemon grass but it was not chilli enough. It could also have been hotter as when we got onto the second bowl, the air conditioning had cooled the soup off. We asked the lady to add some chillis and she said they usually add less as Hong Kong diners can't tolerate spicy food.
My little daughter ordered her favourite roast pork neck. This dish was beautiful when it came out, charcoal colour on the outsdie and pink inside. It had the full taste of BBQ meat and the dipping sauce was perfect.
Crab dishes at this restaurant are only $168. The waitress recommended curry crab as she said chilli paste crab would be too hot for us. She was wrong and Curry crab had no chilli or hotness at all, however the rich sauce was still really nice for dipping bread. The crab was not big but it was sweet and there were only 6 pieces including the claws but there were only 3 of us, so that left some space for other dishes
We chose garlic buns rather than Indian parathas to go with the curry sauce as the waitress told us the parathas were not home made, so they must be the frozen ones that we buy often from the supermarkets. These buns were bought but baked with garlic, they were just nice. Not really greasy when there is too much butter and not bitter when the garlic is sometimes burnt.
Salted fish fried with baby kai lan. My favourite vegetable and hard to come by in HK. You can't buy them from the markets and only some Thai restaurants have it on their menu. Really nice and I asked them to cook everything with less oil, so it was just right.
Claypot yam rice. We thought maybe that would be too much for the 3 of us but since we don't know when we will venture over again, we went for it and luckily we did. It was delicious. The yam cubes were mixed in the rice and the pieces that touched the bottom of the pot with the rice turned slightly crispy which gave great flavour to the rice. We finished it.
Dessert was on the house and didn't look too appetising but how wrong I was. The transparent jelly is made with fresh coconut juice and the jelly was refreshing without being too sweet, the perfect ending to a spicy and rich meal.
This restaurant is a true find and we will be back with more people. There were some other dishes we wanted to try but couldn't with just 3 people. This is the most exciting find for me in a long while.
