Spanish cuisine is suddenly blooming in town in the past year. This Sal Curioso sets herself in a very good location, with a large floor area, a balcony and chic interior, it easily reminds me of the hip design in Spain. Read from Open Rice that having dinner in Sal Curioso could be expensive, having lunch here would be a thrifty option. They offer a choice of 3 tapas or sweets for $150 or unlimited serves for $250 (at weekends, $220 on weekdays). The serving size is slightly smaller than standard tapas, but if you plan to have repeated visit, the $150 (with no service charge unless in a table of 7 or more) set is already a good deal to share plates with friends.

Better to avoid non-peak hours for food (such as our visiting hour) as many of the dishes were not cook-to-order, likely due to the petit serving size and it’s understandable. Some of the tapas we ordered were either warm or a bit dried due to being kept warm for a long time.

Seared squid and mussels were cooked with spicy squid ink. Potatoes shaped into tubes were crunchy, adding a good mixture to the dish.

b) Slow Roasted Pork Belly – 8/10

2 cubes of pork belly with a dollop of mustard on the top, served with white bean salad. The meat was tender, with layers of fat but the skin could be crispier. It was a bit dry, might have been sitting in the warmer for a while.

c) Buttermilk Fried Chicken Bites – 7/10

As recommended by the waiter, chicken breast fillet was first deep fried before placing in the oven to keep the tenderness, however, the texture was much tougher than expected. Lack of seasoning too.

d) Smoked BBQ Ribs and Chickpeas – 7.5/10

Another more cold than warm dish was served, glad that the ribs were scented with nice smoke and the sourness of BBQ sauce was also appropriate.

A couple of clams were cooked with spice and cilantro, spicy enough but the clams were way overcooked and been rested for a while.

f) Peruvian Braised Duck – 8.5/10

This was the hottest (or in the temperature that it should be) dish among all. Portion of a duck leg was deboned and shredded. The coriander and orange slices gave a good blend of flavours to the dish.
