Perfume River Vietnamese is located in Causeway Bay and has been here since 1979. It was always not too busy but oddly one year, there were long queues as there was some sort of news that they were going to close. But for whatever reason, they remained open. For lunch one day, I decided to revisit this old establishment. It's an interesting place. If you grew up in North America and had Vietnamese there, the layout of the restaurant is exactly like this. A small family own place, very old fashioned. No flashy chic decor. Just simple tables and chairs.
It even had paper chopstick covers with instructions on how to use chopsticks. Just like how it was in Chinatown.
Menu is in English and Chinese. It's cash only and they do charge 10% service charge. They have no set lunches during lunch session which is odd in such a competitive food market. Their menu has a large variety of dishes and some you probably can't find any where else.Ordered a raw beef pho ($55). The beef was pretty good. Moist and tender. The noodles were al dente. However, the soup base was just a light MSG laced broth. Typical of many other Hong Kong style pho.
An old school Vietnamese place, not very authentic but fairly inexpensive. I'm always unsure if I'll be back but then I go back whenever I realize I haven't been here in a while and they haven't closed. Perhaps in the past, they were really excellent Vietnamese. But now, in a market with more selection, this place isn't that great. But at least it wasn't horrible.
