It's been a year since Yamataka Seafood Market opened and I haven't really been back since. But as I saw they were doing a Hello Kitty series of events for a limited time, I decided to return to give it a try.The front was decorated with Hello Kitty and sakura. The front entrance area was also decorated with fake sakura blossoms. The windows were also decorated with Hello Kitty. For this special event, the standing sushi area had a special Hello Kitty menu. For this special event, the standing sushi area had a special Hello Kitty menu. You can reserve online ahead of time but as I went during a weekday afternoon, there was no queue at all so I just walked right in.
They also had Hello Kitty themed alcoholic drinks where you can also purchase the glasses.
I ordered two items as I came here for lunch.
Hello Kitty Seafood Don ($198). This was super cute and I think they did a pretty good job making it look very kawaii. There was a lot of rice but not that much sashimi. The sashimi that was use were just random diced pieces and weren't that fresh to begin with. The flowers were egg and the bow was a piece of daikon. Pretty inventive. But for $198 and the sashimi wasn't great quality, one obviously ordered this for the Hello Kitty factor.
Hello Kitty Mizu Shingen Mochi ($38). This was my dessert. Personally, I love jelly and this was pretty nice. It had a wonderful salty sweet sakura syrup. I liked it enough and it was pretty.
One thing I noticed since it opened is the standing sushi area now have chairs. I guess too many people complained about standing to implement this. The problem with the addition of chairs is that the tables were all designed for standing. There was not enough room to stick your legs underneath the tables. This made me sit on the side and causing my back to hurt from the improper sitting position. I noticed everyone else had the same dilemma. They either sat with their legs on the side or just wide apart. At one point, I just stood up because my back hurt so much. I have no idea why they would add chairs and not change the tables to fit this adjustment.
It's too bad the seafood isn't as fresh as I would have liked. This was their selling point when it first opened. Pretty disappointing. May only be back if they do another promotion.
