Having a horrible sense of direction (路癡) is no fun. Often time when I want to go to a restaurant or store, I look up the address online, but in the end I still land on the wrong street or place even with the printed map in hand. With the retail store of 余均益's located at 西營盤, I know I will get lost despite my strong desire to get a bottle of the renowned Hong Kong chili sauce.Fortunately a 有心又有記性的食友 got me a medium sized bottle! With the retail store of 余均益's located at 西營盤, I know I will get lost despite my strong desire to get a bottle of the renowned Hong Kong chili sauce.
Fortunately a 有心又有記性的食友 got me a medium sized bottle! I was ecstatic and couldn’t wait to try it. I agree with the previous two reviews that what makes 余均益 standout is the balance of different flavors. The sauce is spicy but not too much, so it helps to elevate the flavor of a dish rather than overpower it. The vinegary essence was of the right amount to increase your appetite, and the garlic was not assertive to overshadow the chili. While it has most of the usual ingredients of other chili sauces like chili, vinegar, garlic, sugar, salt, and oil, one thing that is unique to 余均益 is the addition of sweet potato! I think its presence may have contributed to the “thickness” and the umami of the sauce, but hey, do I really care?
To maximize the enjoyment of 余均益, I literally search for food that goes well with it and will be posting them soon. With my everyday consumption of 余均益, this medium sized lasted about 2 weeks.
Is it the world’s best chili sauce? I don’t know if I can make that claim. But Hong Kong’s best chili sauce? I believe so!
