Good Izakaya from Okinawa.
Very good oyster with Uni sauce;
Good udon;
Reasonable lunch sets;
Good service.
Worth a try.
Ambience:
It's located at the World Trade Centre (above Muji).
The place was fairly spacious with a lot of natural light. About 6 tables for 4 persons and quite a number of seats in front of the sushi bar and grills.
Comfortable ambience with 'Yoshida brothers' playing in the background, cool and casual.
Menu (in Chinese, Japanese & English):
They had set lunches and a la carte menu also available during lunch time.
The set lunches were pretty reasonable.
The a la carte menu had a decent amount of sushi, sashimi, Yakitori (between HK$22 and HK$68), grilled ox tongue, various types of grilled fish (such as kinki , salmon head...etc.), some Okinawan dishes such as Goya Champuru (stir fried bitter gourd), Okinawa pancake, a number of dishes from Kagoshima and Nagoya revolving Kurobuta (charcoal grilled Kurobuta and pancake with Kurobuta .) and other onigiri/rice/noodles. Comprehensive.
Some dishes were from Okinawa but not all. It's less "Okinawan " that En or Rakuen. But it seems that even though Mekiki came from Okinawa, it's focus was on providing regional specialties from different prefectures.
We ordered the following:
Oyster set:
This was excellent. The four oysters were most likely from Hiroshima. Those were grilled before pouring uni sauce on top of it. The oysters were big, succulent and filled with umami.
The decent amount of spinach beneath the oysters soaked up all the flavours from the oysters and the uni sauce. Very tasty.
It didn't look substantial but was actually quite filling.
HK$98 with salad, ox tongue appetizer, miso soup, a bowl of rice and a drink. Good value for money.
Highly recommended.
Okinawan pancake ("Hiraya-chi")
Essentially like a Chinese pancake with Okonimiyaki toppings (nori, bonito flakes and sauce). The pancake was crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Interesting but a bit pricey at HK$82.
Sashimi set (HK$148)
The sushis were loosely held and fairly petit. The toppings used were all reasonably fresh.The vinegar taste of the sushi rice was fairly pronounced. No complaints about any of the sushi in view of the price.
The udon was surprisingly good.
Probably Inaniwa udon. Smooth and springy. The soup was made of mild shoyu and bonito stock with chopped spring onions. Excellent.
The veggies used in the salad were fresh.
The set also came with a bowl of yellow miso soup and coffee or tea.
HK$148 is pretty reasonable.
Chicken soft bones:
We originally intended to order Tsukune (HK$22) but mistakenly ordered nankotsu instead. These were decent, be it grilled with salt or grilled with tare.
Conclusion:
The bill came down to HK$210 each, which I consider to be reasonable.
Other than the 10% service charge, there weren't any hidden charges.
The service was good, the place was comfy and most importantly, the oyster set in particular was very good.
