上一次來附近吃午餐的時候已經有留意過這家店,回去有看過食評,似乎不怎麼好,是日再經過找地方吃午餐,還是決定來試試看。 午餐時間,店裡面只有一檯客。店內裝潢是有設計過的,走美國酒吧風,牆上掛著一個舊式的大鐘,還放著美國國旗。 午餐價錢很便宜,包餐湯/沙律,價錢由$38~$78。單看餐牌會以為全部都是西菜選擇,其實是暗藏玄機。上兩個星期吃過好好好吃的fish burger,所以今天就試試這裡的sole fillet burger,而鬆弛就要了蘋果汁豬扒飯。沙律和餐湯二選一,兩個人可以剛好兩樣都試。沙律菜算新鮮,不過黑醋汁似乎下得太輕手了, 底部的菜都根本沒味道。旁邊的多士,很脆,如果可以加點蒜蓉或者是提供牛油應該會更好,否則不如跟餐湯好過跟沙律。忌廉粟米湯。用的肯定不是罐頭湯,但有機會是罐頭黃粟打成蓉,因為我還是第一次喝一碗有很多粟米渣的粟米湯。在照片中一些深黃色的就是粟米渣,其實正確一點講是粟米的衣,變得很有咬口,頗為奇怪,不過味道是正常的。 這是我的sole fillet burger,用木板上是很有趣的presentation,可是這個burger確實令人失望。一開始我還以為是炸魚漢

沙律和餐湯二選一,兩個人可以剛好兩樣都試。沙律菜算新鮮,不過黑醋汁似乎下得太輕手了, 底部的菜都根本沒味道。旁邊的多士,很脆,如果可以加點蒜蓉或者是提供牛油應該會更好,否則不如跟餐湯好過跟沙律。

忌廉粟米湯。用的肯定不是罐頭湯,但有機會是罐頭黃粟打成蓉,因為我還是第一次喝一碗有很多粟米渣的粟米湯。在照片中一些深黃色的就是粟米渣,其實正確一點講是粟米的衣,變得很有咬口,頗為奇怪,不過味道是正常的。

這是我的sole fillet burger,用木板上是很有趣的presentation,可是這個burger確實令人失望。一開始我還以為是炸魚漢堡,沒想到是煎魚漢堡,怪就只能怪我沒有問清楚,可是我真的沒想到是煎魚柳。

首先魚柳不夠熱,而且頗油膩,看著兩塊只稍微煎過下的魚柳,食慾大減。裡面夾著蕃茄和生菜,再加少量的沙律醬,再配一個毫不鬆軟,像是在超級市場買到的現成漢堡飽,感覺很業餘,當然整體味道也不會好到哪裡。

鬆弛的蘋果汁豬扒份量還真少,只有一塊豬扒,如果是男人吃的應該不會夠飽。豬扒有點鞋,但勝在有蘋果汁搭夠味道。最奇怪的是伴碟的竟然是菜心,在這樣的環境和菜式類別之下,我會期望我看到的配菜會是西蘭花之類的,而不會是菜心,難道店家有其他美國菜式會用到菜心?

還好一開始沒有期望,所以也沒有失望,只是比起預期的還要差,雖然沒有試到這裡真正的美國菜,可是實在沒有再度光臨的勇氣了。

We had dinner here a couple weeks ago and saw the lunch sets so we decided to come back and try, and it was a very good experience! The place was packed by the time we arrived, about half past noon, but luckily we got a table right away as a table was just being cleared! Must've been because we were a table of two.. if we had more people with us, we would have needed to book for sure. and it came with a soup or salad so we chose both. At the end of the meal we were too full to have the set dessert, which was a creme brulee (I think was another $10 or $12 can't remember), but we had a coffee and tea, which was also included (the tea could have been stronger in my opinion!)

I have to say, although the lunch was good, the dinner was much better in terms of the "American" flavor, even though it costs a little bit more (The BBQ ribs and chicken are a must try!!!!!!!!!!!
) Having just come from North America ourselves, it was good to taste a bit of home while being away. You get what you pay for!

We will probably come back again to try next week's lunch menu (waiter said they change it every week) and try more of the dinner menu!

下午兩時半,想找地方吃遲來的下午茶,在附近逛了一圈,最終選擇了位置較僻靜的Ugly American Bar+Grill,當時店內只有兩位食客,十分寧靜,正好可以悠閒地慢慢坐、慢慢吃,感覺很自在。雖然餐廳就在馬路旁,但車流極少,空氣絕不混濁。我們吃了~蘿蔔湯:跟餐的餐湯。有蘿蔔味,濃淡適中,味道不錯;那片麵包則太硬。沙律:如不喜歡喝湯,可選配沙律。蔬菜新鮮爽口,很清新。漢堡($38):漢堡包很香軟,內有一塊煎得頗脆的魚柳,加上少許芥末,味道不錯。薯條很香脆,好味道!價錢便宜,以$38可享用如此質素的漢堡包,再加沙律、飲品,實在經濟實惠,好!意粉($58):味道有少許酸,腸仔數量足夠,意粉軟硬適中,份量尚可。熱咖啡:咖啡又熱又香,但那個杯較不「就手」。凍檸茶:凍飲不用加錢,好!上菜速度尚可,氣氛很寫意。整體而言,我很滿意這頓午餐。

阿爸生日, 本想請阿爸食餐好的lunch,他推介了這家ugly american, 說幫襯過味道不錯,但今日去了非常的失望!3個人點了Chicken & Mushroom (Set Lunch), Fish Fry和Caesar Salad加Prawn.Fish Fry 味道不錯, 炸得很鬆脆,魚肉也嫩。餐湯(菜湯)也很清甜。Chicken & Mushroom 不過不失。自己想吃清淡點,點了Caesar Salad, 就中伏了Salad本身$79, 另加$58 可加Prawn (menu中文譯做"大蝦")既然叫得做"大蝦", 我expect 是大隻點的蝦開邊再燒這樣點完不久waiter走出來說大蝦沒貨,然後另一個waitress 又跑出來, 說有貨呀有貨呀之後Salad到了, Caesar Salad上面有5隻手指大小的燒蝦(連殼)一食.... 哇,霉ge!!! 再食, 5隻蝦的肉也是霉到入口即溶的!!!是我生平食過最難食的蝦, 好一個難得的經驗||||| (究竟他們在哪裡找到這批倉底貨?)跟waiter說了蝦肉很霉, 收得百四蚊一個salad但這樣的質素,有點期望waiter會做點

之後Salad到了, Caesar Salad上面有5隻手指大小的燒蝦(連殼)
一食.... 哇,霉ge!!!

再食, 5隻蝦的肉也是霉到入口即溶的!!!
是我生平食過最難食的蝦, 好一個難得的經驗

waiter說了蝦肉很霉,
收得百四蚊一個salad但這樣的質素,
有點期望waiter會做點什麼(換過D蝦之類),
但結果是無動於衷什麼也沒做....

阿爸又想息事寧人,
我在忍受那個很難食的salad...
最後一家人在不太愉快的氣氛下食畢這餐生日飯...

This recently opened restaruant, occupying the space of former hotdog joint Toppings, has received quite a bit of media coverage lately. A fellow foodie pal and I decided to try out the place.

I picked up the a la carte menu before the evening came. Calling itself the "Ugly American" there has to be the American staples like Buffalo Wings and stuff. But looking at the pictures here, it seem that the restaurant is going for a more sophisticated style than your usual foot-long baby ribs.

When I arrived at Ugly American at 7:30 pm, it was almost empty (well, given it was a public holiday).

Simply decorated, American-style (modern type I suppose), nothing much was changed fromits previous existence. Even the "Open" neon sign was there.

Later K arrived and we decided on our order.

The bread, in this case half of a baguette, was probably the best item in the whole dinner, to my surprise. Warm with a crispy crust, it was a perfect start for the meal, which unfortunately was going downhill as we went on (to be elaborated below). And may I take this opportunity to thank K for her tasty homemade jam which went nicely with the bread too.

According to Chef-Owner Mr Christopher Gallaga, he got his cooking inspirations from his grandmother of Sicilian ancestry, and I wondered if this was one of his granny's recipes. When we asked the waitress she actually described as something similar to 肉醬意粉 (Spaghetti Bolognaise). Rigatoni is a kind of tube-like pasta which was actually like penne but just larger in diameter, and the pasta was coated in a ragu (rightly, meat-sauce) of tomato, garlic, oregano, poultry, pork, and beef according to the menu. Well the waitress was right, it tasted just like a drier version of 肉醬意粉 and that's it. Probably worth mentioning was the rigatoni itself, I thought it meant to be al dente but after some baking (probably) the pasta had gone too dry and actually a bit on the hard side. Personally I don't recommend this dish, but after you've had say the meat or fish mains you'll probably want some more substantial carbs to fill your stomachs.

This one was a regular feature in magazine articles and it was why I picked this dish. Instead of duck leg they used game hen (野雞
???), did the confit in olive oil and finally seared the skin to give a crispy texture.

Yeah the presentation on the chopping block was spectecular (oh with my favorite haricot vert beans and mash - not too greasy), but the portion was certainly not your normal "American size". Probably times have changed and Americans now have a smaller appetite? The skin had been seared just a little too much than the ideal golden apperance, nevertheless the meat was succulent and tender, yet not as "gamy" as I expected. I think this dish serves to give people some new insights on American cuisine, but the chef could further finetune the execution. (Say the plating - I liked this one better, instead of the meat being stacked on top of the mash like they looked in magazines!)

I hate to say this but this was another disappointment. The name of the mussels they used was funny - called Kinkawooka and from Australia. On Ugly American's website they even said that even if the clams weren't open they were still okay to eat.

However they promote the Farm-to-Fork concept and painstakingly source the ingredients, what mattered was the taste of the final product. The white wine sauce in which the mussels were immersed was way too salty, and luckily we didn't use the accompanying garlic baguette for dipping, otherwise we'd be going into kidney failure pretty soon. We told the wait staff about this and the reply was that it was "sea water flavor". What the...??

And at this point we didn't bother to open the unopened shells.

Things hit rock bottom by dessert time. As adventurous diners we wanted to "complete the course" before giving a fair comment. But this was just an utter failure from the rubbery piece of cookie/ langue de chat biscuit to the stone-hard pie crust. Finally when we settled the bill they waived the charge of the apple pie as a apology.

Although having more misses than hits in this meal, I'm reluctant to give a thumbs-down to Ugly American yet, not because of my better experience at lunch on a subsequent visit (to be reported later, see when...), but its aim of providing an alternative kind of American dining experience.

P.S. Free corkage for spending > $300 per head. On the evening of our visit we just encounted a group who were here for a blind tasting session.

星期六11/6 一行4人去, 因為誤信佢第一份留言食評,話D食物好大份,同埋自己誤以為D美國餐廳食物會好大份, 以免浪費同想留番D錢食甜品,所以4個人叫3主菜+1個頭盤,主菜叫了一份魚PLANKED COD,一份牛扒ENTRECOTE,同一份雞Confit of Game Hen,同埋Arugula and tomato bruschetta... 第一道菜係份魚,價錢係225元,魚SIZE係約3CM厚,一盒啤牌咁大塊,我們4人一人一小淡剛剛好無哂 .. 公平D講,味道係好食‧但個份量就 跟住係個雞同牛扒一起上,個牛扒價錢係299,SIZE係大約2盒啤牌加埋咁大塊,厚度同一盒啤牌咁上下,有D失望,味道正常,無話好食唔好食,雞好似係有半隻上碟,不過SIZE係一個成年人一個拳頭咁大,而內有骨頭,所以扣扣埋埋得小小肉食 ,有D失望又驚訝,最後叫了2個甜品.. 一個CHOCOLATE MOUSSE唔得..太甜,一個APPLE PIE 正常 ... 新店開張第一時間去試。一行五人叫了兩個前菜及一人一個主菜。地點好近炮台山A出口,唔係繁忙的電器道,而係沿油街入一條的宏安街,其實都好就腳,放工係金鐘過去都係四個字左右,咁我哋都可以考慮去食午餐。哈哈*忘了拍酒,而所有相片是用iphone3GS拍,所以質素..........愛Buffalo Wing的我第一時間點了,另一個前菜是Arugula and tomato bruschetta先來餐包熱、脆、鮮!味道剛剛好!但係我覺得乾咗少少。其實我主要食個醬!嘻嘻........其實主廚以前係Dan Ryan做過,而係香港要食buffalo wing都係要去嗰度先覺對胃口,但最近去覺得佢差咗好多,連個出哂名嘅muffin都不再好味,服務都差咗(我哋睇完戲入去好似唔想serve咁 >.<)!而家要食都會去Ugly American啦!好新鮮呀!友人極愛此bruschetta!其實食完此兩前菜、餐包及白酒已經感到飽了;但極期待主菜的來臨。第一個主菜來了................呢個雞真係好嫩,個豆泥好甜!會再食!第二個主菜........是我的青口好味道呀!鮮!第三個主菜是

味道剛剛好!但係我覺得乾咗少少。其實我主要食個醬!嘻嘻........
其實主廚以前係Dan Ryan做過,而係香港要食buffalo wing都係要去嗰度先覺對胃口,但最近去覺得佢差咗好多,連個出哂名嘅muffin都不再好味,服務都差咗(我哋睇完戲入去好似唔想serve咁 >.<)!而家要食都會去Ugly American啦!

其實食完此兩前菜、餐包及白酒已經感到飽了;但極期待主菜的來臨。

如果你唔介意肥,呢個pork belly其實好正,外脆內嫩;但因為份量太大(已向主廚反映),所以我哋幫手食都食唔哂。呢個菜另一特別之處是跟介蘭。

最後的主菜是我當晚最愛的牛牛

好好好好味呀,d肉嫩到好似slow cook出嚟咁呀!Chef Chris話entrecote仲正。喜愛牛牛的不要錯過了!

實在太飽了,下次先有機會試甜品了!可能因為第一日日開業所以份量好大,我希望佢減量否則唔可以食到3-course。

以同樣價值的食物來比較質素高過大部份食店。一定會再去。
