After a movie, we decided to eat in the mall. And just outside the theater was Sul Jib. A Korean restaurant that we noticed had very good reviews. Serving various Korean dishes. The seating inside was spacious with a few with curtains to provide a more private space.Menu is in English, Korean and Chinese. Menu is in English, Korean and Chinese. They offer a la carte as well as sets for 2 or four along with a seasonal menu. The seasonal menu was focused on ginseng and was in collaboration with Sulwhasoo, Korean skin care line that uses ginseng. Price was $680 and we decided to try that.
After ordering, the staff provided me with a card to get a sample at Sulwhasoo along with a $100 coupon. Conveniently it's also located in Times Square so I got that after dinner!
The set started out with Banchan. Six dishes were presented. Dried small fish, marinaded daikon, spicy fish cake, pickled kimchi burdock, rolled egg in seaweed and the most interesting of all ... a spicy fish cake. A fairly decent variety of choices.
The Kimchi was in a pot and the staff cut it into smaller pieces the table. Apparently they make it themselves in these actual pots. A bit spicy but not too much with a good acidic kick.
Seoltangjeol-in Insam Saelleodeu (Honeyed Ginseng Salad) was the next item presented. This was definitely different and surprisingly good. I expected ginseng to be bitter but it wasn't. It was crisp like burdock. Heavily doused in honey so it was sweet.
Modeum Jeon (Assorted Korean Pancakes) was the next item on the set menu. We were a bit taken a back at first. We expected the usual large flat piece of pancake but instead they were individual items, coated in egg and deep fried. Shrimp, hot chili peppers, spinach leaf, shitake mushroom, sweet potato all two of each. A spicy dipping sauce was presented on the side. It seemed like a deconstructed Korean pancake.
But most surprising of all? Each item was stuffed with beef marinaded in a wonderful Korean BBQ sauce.
Insam Sagoltang (Ginseng with Beef Bone Soup) was the next item. Plenty of braised short rib that was so tender, it fell off the bone easily. Big pieces of daikon, shitake mushroom and carrot helped soak up the very savory sauce. An large chili pepper was on top along with, you guess it, a piece of ginseng. Shredded egg was there as well.
Jeonbog Samgyetang (Ginseng Chicken Soup with Abalone) was the best item in the set. Two abalone were on top. The chicken itself was stuffed with glutinous rice, red dates and ginseng. The staff cut it all up and it continued to heat on top of the propane stove. The soup was very good. Savory with a strong taste of the chicken. This was a massive meal in itself. The chicken meat was not dried out and still juicy.
Insam Bibibamp was a surprise as it was you do it yourself. Red rice is provided (and a lot of it!). The toppings (carrot, bean sprouts, spinach, shitake mushrooms, zucchini, daikon, jews ear and ginseng was placed on another plate. You add as much or as little as you wanted.
The set is quite a lot of food. The staff told us it was enough for two people, but personally, it's enough for at least 3. The use of ginseng in the dishes were clever. It does get very busy and there was a line but the time we left so I'd suggest getting there early or makng a reservation.
