After getting sick of days and days of traditional chinese new year's cuisine, we decided to dine at Pizza Express, Tai Koo Shing - a decision that we eventually agreed was an excellent one.
We decided to go back to basics, since the most basic dishes are often the most difficult to master.
- We had a soup of the day (red pepper soup).
- Benevento salad
- Lazio pizza
- Penne el Pommodore e Mozarella
Our family lives overseas and only returns to Hong Kong once every year. We find that there are very few good western cuisine restaurants in Hong Kong, which are all often very pricey. But I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food at Pizza Express. I've tried Pizza Express at Star Street also but it was not very memorable, but the one at Tai Koo Shing is a completely different story.
To begin with with the Benevento Salad - it was excellent. It was accompanied by six of Pizza Express' baked dough balls, which were a DELIGHT in both taste and texture, and accompanied the salad perfectly (as did the fresh mozarella cheese). The mixed salad was very fresh, as were the tomatoes and mushrooms, which were also aptly warm. The avocado was creamy, ripe and delicious and the sauce was just perfect for the salad. Very well done.
The Lazio pizza was also great - pancetta ham, rocket leaves, grana padano cheese and egg (hard/soft - wechose the latter). The pizza was great down to every detail, from the fragrant hint of olive oil to the cheese which was not heavy and complemented the other ingredients well. We choose a soft egg and it was great - the egg white was so smooth and 'eggful' in taste, the egg yolk was also rich and tasteful. We chose a regular thin crust, which was perfect and overall the pizza was just right - not too dry, not too moist.
I was very happy with the pasta - it was a simple mozarella and basil penne. The pasta was cooked perfectly, it was quite 彈牙 and not awfully soft and textureless like some restaurant's pasta. The mozarella was of an excellent quality, and it had a great fragant hint of olive oil and basil - it was perfect in every way.
But not only the food deserves mention - the environment was also a wonderful one. There are very few ground-level restaurants in Hong Kong that enjoy a wide and unmarred view. The Pizza Express, Tai Koo Shing is neatly tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong city life (at least at night time, for dinner), it faces a quiet, tranquil little park - perfect.
Overall, it was an excellent, excellent hearty meal that left us very satisfied! I believe they also have special family, two-persons sets for saturday and sunday, which I looked at - very good pricing! Would whole-heartedly recommend this to anyone - the price is also reasonable, not expensive.
