There are days when I get off work and I am just too tired to cook something and I just want something light like a sandwich and salad. My go to place is always Pret but I'm always open to anything new that crops up near where I live. Recently, a new sandwich and salad take away shop opened in Sogo's grocery section and I decided to give it a try. They also offered 10% discount as they were still new.The shop had a nice display of various salads to choose from. They also sell smoothies and a lob
The shop had a nice display of various salads to choose from. They also sell smoothies and a lobster roll.
The menu stated that the salad was $28-36 per 100 grams. They also claimed the lobster rolls were healthy and only 300 calories. Obviously this place was geared for the health conscience.
Now, whenever I see salad behind a counter like they have displayed, I assume that you can choose the type of salad and have at least a mix of various kinds and it will just be weighed and that is what you pay for. This place? No. I wasn't the only person who assumed this as several other people asked if they could mix their salad and was told no. What they do is have all the salads pre-packaged in plastic boxes and you are to assume that they are 100 grams eah. If you want to mix, you are to buy another pre-packaged plastic box of salad. I thought that was ridiculous.
This is the size of the salad.
It was already pre-packaged. If pre-packaged, I honestly don't see the point of have all the salad on display in bins like they did.
I chose a mix greens salad ($36). Greens were fresh and crispy. I did like the addition of French beans. I wasn't given a choice of salad dressing so what I got was, I guess, honey mustard? I really couldn't tell but it was sweet and really REALLY thick. It was so thick, I couldn't pour it out at all. I had to scoop it out and spread it like butter. It was almost like they just added a lot of thickener to a sweetened mustard sauce. At some point, I just whipped up my own salad dressing and used that instead out of frustration of trying to spread the salad dressing they provided me.
The lobster rolls were made to order so I did wait quite a while for mine. Price? $98 for six inch size. It was placed in a very sturdy cardboard container.
Upon opening it, this was one sad SAD lobster roll. To be fair, it was supposed to be healthy and low calorie. But this was pretty sad. As it was low calorie, the roll was obviously not buttered. But I didn't think it the bread would be so chewy. There wasn't a lot of lobster and was mostly shredded instead of chunks. It wasn't seasoned and mayo was a bit on the watery side. For $98, you can get a whole lot more lobster at most other places like Lobster Central and Hungry Lobster.
I think I sat at home, munching on my unsatisfying lobster roll and the my uninspiring salad. I disliked that I wasn't given the option of mixing my salad. That they had all the salad in bins but you were restricted to a pre-packaged box. There wasn't any flexibility and the food wasn't really that good. If I want pre-package salads, I'll just go back to Pret. At least their salads taste a whole lot better. I won't be back.
