I was always tempted to try the cake ever since I read the alluring reviews from newspapers/magazines. But the whole experience turned out to be quite disappointing.
The shop was not easy to find to start with. On the address it's said to be located in Hysan Road, but actually it's in San Wui Road. The seemingly modern minimalistic deco strives to be hip and chic, however in reality it's as plain as its products. And I chose the rum and cherry cake, because I love rum and cherry.
After the first bite, I definitely thought there was something lacking and something redundant. The first impression was the 'unbearable lightness' of the cake. Yes it' was not too sweet, yes the chocolate cream was smooth and yes the cake was moist. But there was no after-taste that lingers in your mouth as a good chocolate cake should be, not to mention the rum and cherry tasted absolutely blasé. I can't help but think the redundancy is the 'ly' between 'awful' and 'chocolate'.
Am I being too mean, I asked myself, or am I expecting too much from a of $200 cake? After all, it's no more costly than a cake from the Maxim's or Aroma. Should I give it another try? Maybe the banana cake as many of the reviewers recommended. But again, should I spend money on something I don't like? Maybe I should follow my intuition, this is something I've learned after so many years.
