There are several McDonald's in Causeway Bay, but this one is usually quiet and not too many people. Probably due to location which is away from the more popular areas. Situated behind Times Square and across the street from Crown Plaza Holiday Inn, I usually go here if I need a McDonald's moment before hopping the tram home.Today, I needed to use up a coffee voucher at McCafe I bought during Christmas as I wanted the cute X'mas mug. Today, I needed to use up a coffee voucher at McCafe I bought during Christmas as I wanted the cute X'mas mug. I ordered a green tea soy latte and decided to add $9 for a macaron.
One shouldn't expect it to be exceptional but it wasn't horrible. For the price of a small Starbucks coffee, you get a bigger size. I've been to quite a few McCafes and I find this branch not too bad. And I've been to many where the coffee was so sweet, you wonder why they call it coffee. There is plenty of matcha taste. And they serve it in an actual coffee cup! There are quite a few I've been to who serve it in a paper cup.
I added a macaron. When you order a medium coffee, you can have one for $9, otherwise it's $14. I knew it wasn't going to be a good macaron. It's McDonald's for crying out loud! But I was curious to try. I remember when I was in Paris and my nonstop daily devouring of macarons from every where, be it famous or just a random patisserie. I even ate one the size of my hand! And then I discovered McCafe in Paris and saw they had macarons. They weren't too bad. Not great but ok. And only one euro!
These were a far cry from the macarons in McCafe Paris. Yes, they were larger in size then the more famous brands. But oddly sticky to the touch. The cookie wasn't crunchy. It was just chewy. There wasn't much raspberry flavor. However, the only pro was it wasn't overly sweet that I wanted to drown myself in bitter coffee or tea to clense my palette like many of the local Hong Kong places that make macarons that aren't Laduree, etc. So, for $9, I can forgive as those other places charge $15-18 for cloying sweetness and the same texture as the McCafe ones. Yes, it's not Laduree in terms of the perfect macaron, but it's not horrible.
For $9, I'd try another.
Should note: I found from past visits that the tall male barista makes a better cup of coffee than the others. He's also friendly.
