I'm Japanese, and this sushi restaurant used to impress me and my Hong Kongese husband with very valuable 16-piece lunch set.But our last visit during lunch time was very disappointing. We ordered the usual 16-piece lunch (290HKD?) which you can choose 16 pieces of sushi from the list that usually contains some expensive and our favourite fish, like Toro (fatty tuna), sea urnichin and Negitoro (fatty tuna with spring onion). After we'd chosen sushi we wanted, we were told that sea urnichin and negitoro were not available that left mostly rather cheap fish on the list. If did not seem good value anymore, so we kindly asked whether we could change to more economical "sushi lunch set" (around 140HKD). But the waitress refused and after arguing for 10minutes, more senior guy came out and offered us to choose "anything" we wanted. So I asked if he really means any fish available on that day, but he actually meant anything from that list which did not contain two main things that we wanted. There was no difference, so after explaining so many times that we did not want to pay extra if those fish was not available, he finally accepted that we changed our order. That was good. However, when my cheaper sushi lunch set came out, I saw a piece of Negitoro sushi on my plate...something that wasn't supposed to be available was suddenly in front of me. Maybe they had just enough for the set lunch, so ok, I was happy afterall to eat it. Then my husband's unagi (grilled eel)....or something that looked like unagi arrived. It had the right sauce and the spice essential for unagi...but the fish wasn't unagi. In my entire life, I'd never seen any other white fish having the sauce and spice for unagi. Whoever prepared it, if he worked in Japanese sushi shop, he couldn't possibly get it wrong! My husband wasn't Japanese obviously...he did not notice until I asked him if the menu actually said unagi. We were such an annoying pair of customers for them...so when I quietly asked them that fish didn't seem like unagi, a waitress just brought it back to kitchen to exchange to the real unagi, without any words! We used to love this sushi restaurant and the sushi was actually good. I really hope the service goes back to the standard before...oh and the last thing, even though we spent majority of time communicating with them and waiting for the second "unagi" to come out, we were asked to leave the table while we were still having our desert, because "we agreed over the phone that we leave before that time". Then, if I ever go back again, I'll ask over the phone for the availability of the fish.

I paid a visit to Sushi Hiro with a couple of colleagues. This establishment has been around for a few years, and in general it is excellent value for its lunch sushi set, but I always felt it was mediocre for dinner. Nevertheless, I was happy to give it another try. They were obviously doing well enough to take over the floor immediately above their original location, and the space now includes tatami rooms. We sat at the counter and asked for omakase - knowing what this would do to our bill at the end of the evening. I must say I don't have many regrets for doing this. As usual one starts with sashimi. There was the usual selection of fish, including a very nice piece of o-toro. We were also served a gigantic oyster from Hokkaido - one of the largest I have had in a very long time. The oyster had been sliced in half, and even then each half required at least 2 big bites...The oyster was obviously very fleshy and creamy, and yet there was enough brine to give the creaminess a good balance. The botan ebi (牡丹海老) was pretty large and reasonably sweet, but unfortunately not live. We also had some grilled fish between the sashimi and sushi - a small ayu (鲇) and a reasonably large aji (鯵). I had meant to ask the chef to serve us the aji as a tataki, then deep-fry the bones. But oh well... it's pretty good as a grilled fish, too.Sushi was pretty decent, and towards the end we started ordering our own favorites. The uni (云丹) was pretty fresh and we were served slightly larger and fresher pieces. I got a pretty large piece of unagi (鳗) which was coated with sweet soy sauce, and two of us shared a large and fat scallop (帆立) that was just so fresh and sweet. I ordered some ikura (いくら), thinking that they wouldn't have the untreated sujiko (筋子)... The ikura was so-so, but just as I finished my piece I noticed that the chef takes out a plastic container and out comes a chunk of sujiko... Aaarrgh! We were all pretty full, and I settled for a Japanese white peach while the ladies chose peach sorbet. As expected, the peach was very ripe - sweet and juicy - and reminded me of the peach I had at the market in Bukhara. Wonderful stuff. The bill came out to be just less than double of what I thought it would be before dinner, but understandable since we chose omakase and had many yummy pieces. It doesn't quite measure up to my favorite Imamura (今村), but nevertheless is another nice place for sushi near my home. original blogpost: http://chi-he-wan-le.blogspot.com/2008/08/another-sushi-joint.html
