朋友推介在上環好吃的西餐, 出名的是芝士入饌的美食, 愛吃芝士的我, 也很想來一試, 趁這天有空, 就相約一起來吃。從上環站, 要走上一段路上斜, 才能來到這裡, 懂看地圖的話也算容易找到, 它在一個小巷中, 感覺神祕。接待的是一位外藉女性, 感覺都算nice, 帶我們上2/f坐, 當時全場無人, 我們被安排在二人位, 沒有位置放隨身物品, 也坐得不舒服, 於是想調位, 那waitress見到後說不准調位, 理由是所有座位都被預訂了, 要我們移回原位, 但我們由始至終只見到有2個食客來, 何來全場滿座? 真是奇怪至極!給我們調位, 根本對她來說沒有任何影響!hanger steak $228牛medium熟, 都不算靭, 但口感有點奇怪, 感覺不是牛靚的部分, 揀配小通粉, 幾好食, 白蘿蔔就有點奇怪, 可能在西餐較少見吧。roasted camembert cheese $228最出名是這個芝士薯波, 球形內是薯蓉來, 薯味香, 芝士不會太咸, 好一段時間也不會凝固, 配上一些沙律菜可減膩。食完後覺得, 可以一吃, 但不突出, waitress奇怪的說話也令人吃得不太高興。

牛medium熟, 都不算靭, 但口感有點奇怪, 感覺不是牛靚的部分, 揀配小通粉, 幾好食, 白蘿蔔就有點奇怪, 可能在西餐較少見吧。

最出名是這個芝士薯波, 球形內是薯蓉來, 薯味香, 芝士不會太咸, 好一段時間也不會凝固, 配上一些沙律菜可減膩。

興祝飯局,甜品就緊係唔少得,點左個自家製既m&m’s nougat ice cream ,唔會太軟易溶,每一啖都好實在,有口感,再配大粒m&m 同 cream,仲有咩呀,唱住生日歌咁捧蛋糕上黎架,好有heart

Cantoche is pretty cool. It doesn’t take itself too seriously but also serves up classic casual French food dishes in a young, fun setting. Cantoche apparently means canteen in informal French, and they embrace the theme. A Super Nintendo (what’s the Euro version called? Super Famicom?) hangs on the wall along with a bunch of games, opposite a giant projection screen, which they welcome you to play at any time (they said they have a hard time finding people to play!).  It is equal parts bar and restaurant on the ground floor, though most people were there for food. Drinks are reasonably priced, though I was surprised how small their wine list is – just a page! In that vein, I loved that when I asked for the cheapest wine on the menu (a test!) they didn’t blink an eye, and recommended it whole-heartedly. An utter lack of pretension radiates throughout La Cantoche, and that might appeal to people who find French food in HK a bit... uninviting.

The food is the star though – full disclaimer, we actually didn’t try much besides the Raclette because the cheese platters were HUGE. We had four people but we barely finished two Raclettes, and wouldn’t even have been close without my friend’s individual above-and-beyond effort. Don’t listen when they say it feeds one person holy cow… so much cheese. Here’s what we tried:

I insisted on this because anchovies are life. Was actually really delicious – light flaky phyllo (I think?) pastry tart with anchovies, tomatoes and a bit of cheese on top. Looks a bit like a pizza but it’s much lighter. A great appetizer.

Merguez Sausages

I’ve yet to try a bad Merguez in my life and these were delicious as expected. Spicy and bit denser than other sausages, these really pop with a bit of mustard. We ordered Ratatouille as a side, which was excellent too. Not overly oily and overcooked like many versions of this, la Cantoche manages to keep the texture of each vegetable intact while still marrying the flavors together – just like my non-existent French mom used to make.

Basically the best tater tots you’ve ever had, fluffy potato balls gently deep-fried to crunchy but not till CRUNCHY. If you like deep-fried potatoes, these are killer.

Aaaah my Raclette. This can only be a once-a-winter thing for me, but man is it delicious. La Cantoche serves a giant platter of cured meats along with a large serving of bubbling, gooey Raclette, and even throws in a glass of house wine for HKD 268. Besides being pretty serious value, they do it right, even reheating the Raclette to bubbling as many times as you like over the course of the meal. Raclette and bread / meat / pickles / anything is delicious, so you like cheese, give this a shot while it’s still available (I think it’s Winter-only).

Massive homemade brownie with ice-cream. Obscene but the others loved it. 

Sadly we didn’t get to try much besides the Raclette, but what did try we had was great. We only had a glass of wine each, so the price per person topped out at HKD 300-350. which is a pretty great value for excellent food and service. Try La Cantoche for a fun casual dinner with friends, and it may just be the perfect HK Western-restaurant-first-date-spot – unpretentious, tasty and fun. Get that Raclette before it’s gone, but for God’s sake, don’t try to finish it alone.

Couldn’t think of where to have lunch.....walking by this small and causal French restaurant and just popped in.With causal American style decoration, you won’t expect this is a french restaurant....and the food is not pricy at all. I ordered a chicken cottage pie which is a very good comfort food I have ever had. Matching with a pumpkin soup as appetizer, I am afraid I will fall asleep in office after this tasty full lunch. Will definitely come back to try other dishes!

With causal American style decoration, you won’t expect this is a french restaurant....and the food is not pricy at all.

I ordered a chicken cottage pie which is a very good comfort food I have ever had. Matching with a pumpkin soup as appetizer, I am afraid I will fall asleep in office after this tasty full lunch.

Will definitely come back to try other dishes!

Got told off by waitress for looking if there were any free tables on 1st floor (there were, despite they said there weren't)....at 9pm-ish, we were asked to leave table reserved for DJ, who was due to perform there at 8:30pm.No chance to have their food (that looked pretty good) because we were not welcomed somehow.Fyi, we were sober, quiet, not making a scene group of 4.

Chicken Cordon Bleu

I got the chicken cordon bleu: "juicy chicken breast, French ham & melting Morbier raw cow milk cheese in light crispy breaded crust." This is kind of like a ham and cheese sandwich where the bread has been replaced by chicken and the whole thing is deep-fried. As described, the breading is actually light and crispy, it's just the right amount of cheesy, and the ham is complementary, rather than being overwhelmingly hammy. I was completely pleased and satisfied with this.

You can choose one or two sides with the mains. I think the deal is that if you pick two, you get two half portions-- I definitely recommend two, since the portions are big enough as-is. I got the coquillettes, "buttered French macaroni" and the mesclun salad. I don't see how the macaroni was French, in particular, but it was nicely al dente and lightly buttered. In retrospect, I think I should have put some salt and pepper on it. The salad was also basic, but that's a good thing.

My wife got the fish foil: "barramundi fish fillet on top of leeks fondue & capers, cooked in tightly sealed tin foil." Leeks fondue is leeks sauteed in butter and vinegar (or lemon juice). The fish was tender and very flavorful and juicy. It was another hit.

For sides my wife got the ratatouille, "Provence traditional stewed tomato, zucchini, eggplant, bell peppers, onion with mixed herbs & bay leaves," and the potato noisettes, "golden crispy crusted potato balls with creamy mash filling inside." She reports that the ratatouille was good (I didn't try it, I was having a fried chicken ham sandwich and butter noodles for dinner, I didn't want to ruin that with vegetables). The potato balls were a little bland and needed a sauce or a dip or something. Apparently one of the appetizers is a wheel of melted camembert with these potato balls to dip in-- that I think would be good.

I liked La Cantoche. The food was very good, especially the mains, and reasonably priced. I thought the sides were a little basic and I was kinda hoping for, for example, the buttery French mashed potatoes that they have at Mr. Chatte, but basic is fine when the star of the show is so good. I would definitely come back here.
Other Info. : I caught quite a bit of Pokemon while dining in this establishment.

配了什麼在面,那就是一客 French Pork Terrine (Terrine Champétière),也叫做 Pâté,是法國人專門用來配麵包的豬肉醬,這一種帶咸香的肉醬,是當年在英國的百貨公司中的食品部常見之物。

這一個 Terrine,應該是店方自家製的,入口的味道沒有太過咸同濃烈,而且豬肉的香味很重。肉醬有少少粗,亦因為咁而令人覺得特別香口,配合了麵包,是更加之可口,重口味的你我,單吃的味道更濃香。

主食之一,是 Sole Fish filet with virgin sauce and pilaf rice (Filet de sole sauce vierge, riz pilaf),是法式香煎魚塊配抓飯。Pilaf Rice,我習慣串為 Pulao Rice,是印巴中東一帶的煮飯方法之一,也可以說,是他們的炒飯,加入了香料去炒,很是香口的,而魚是龍脷魚柳,原片香煎,再在上面加上香料,感覺輕盛亦惹味。

另一個是 Homemade chicken meatballs in cream sauce with homemade mashed potatoes (Boulettes de poulet maison sauce crème, purèe maison),在菜式名字當中已經說明了是自家製的食品,而自家製的,就是碟中被厚厚一層 cream 蓋住的雞肉丸。這一個雞肉丸,是用碎雞肉來做,加上了蘿蔔同薯仔蓉得一起搓成,入口香甜,有雞味但又不會很肉,薯蓉有少少 creamy 口感,而且入口香滑帶甜,是一個很美妙的料理,沒有牙嗎? 這 chicken meat ball 一定啱你食。

Dessert 是一個 Chocolate cake (Gâteau au chocolat),朱古力味濃郁,甜味也很好,入口,你會覺得的東西的朱古力度數很高,很純的 chocolate cake,不錯的,而且質地比較結實煙韌,感覺幾 full 下。

很可愛,很 casual 的一個法式午餐,同男仔來,可以玩玩足球飲飲酒,同女仔來,可以輕鬆地享用法國式的家庭美食。說法式浪漫,這兒就不明顯了,但在這兒感受下法國人的真正飲食同悠閒生活,倒是好好的。
