Ordering takeaway, I came across a place that offered hand shredded chicken. It's a small takeaway only shop. All the toppings were displayed in tidy containers. Menu is in English and Chinese. As it's takeaway only, there is no 10% service charge. I decided to get meal box which included main, chicken, side dish and drink for $45. For the main, they offered rice, noodles or rice noodles. As noodles were sold out, I decided to get rice noodles. My chicken choice was the signature and the side dish was jellyfish (an additional $5). The drink was a mini can of Coke. Everything was in a sturdy plastic bag. But the container was a cardboard box that leaked out by the time I got home. It slightly fell apart so take away packaging was not too good. Opening it up, I felt portion was a bit stingy. There wasn't a lot of shredded chicken and the amount of jellyfish was not a lot as well. The rice noodles were ok but there definitely wasn't enough sauce to coat everything. But then again, the sauce also spilled out. Another oddity is they added a wing tip and a few pieces of meat had bones in them. I've never had shredded chicken where they also tossed in the bones. Also, a lot of pieces of chicken skin was added as well so what you really get is not a lot of meat. Stingy on the toppings and small portion size was definitely not value for money. Won't be back.

I had some Times Square cash vouchers so decided to use them at Du Hsiao Yueh for dinner takeaway. They offered a take away meal set for two at a reasonable price. Menu in Chinese only but there is a photo of all they offer. There is no 10% off as it's takeaway. A la carte is also available with a 20% off discount. We decided to choose the takeaway deal. For $168, you choose two mains and it includes 2 bowls of rice and 2 canned soft drinks. Everything is made to order so there is a bit of a wait. Everything was packed in very unsturdy cardboard containers. Though they were biodegradable, they also fell apart easily. Thus, they gave us doubled up the containers so it wouldn't leak. Three Cup Chicken was one of the mains we chose. Portion was a lot but it also was very salty. The chicken meat was tender but it was just way too salty. There was also some red and yellow peppers as well. The other main was steamed pork and squid meat patty. Lots of diced shitake mushrooms was on top but there was so little squid added. It wa fairly dry as well. A bit of flavour so there was no need to add soysauce (which wasn't included). Not very good as it was either dry or too salty. Takeaway containers also wasn't very sturdy. We won't try this again.

I love onigiri. Simply the best take away meal all in one small handheld package. There is a place I love a lot and they are located throughout the Hong Kong area. But I'm always open to any competitions. That is where I came across Rice Ball Factory. Their concept? Adding fillings more common among the locals here for their onigiri. They also offer soup with a more Chinese flair. Interesting concept as local fillings can work with onigiri as it's often served with rice. It's a small grab and go shop. Everything is labelled in English and Chinese. They offer set combos that were a fairly good deal. I decided to get an onigiri and drink for $22 and added an extra onigiri for $12. Everything was place in a paper bag. I liked the drink choices included soymilk from a brand I like a lot. The first one I tried was Carbonara. It said it was the most popular filling. It was a bit bigger in size than the competiton. Plastic wrap ripped off easily. Though the nori was crisp, the rice was terrible. There was a lot of it and it was just mushed together. Way too soft without the nice fluffy chew. Yes, it looked like they used Japanese rice but it was just way too over cooked. The carborna was actually slices of processed cheese with bacon bits. It was pretty terrible. I have no idea why this is the most popular filling? The other was char siu. Something that peaked my interest as I love char siu and honestly rice and char siu works. Lots of filling for this one. The taste was sweet but sadly it was just minced pork and not actual slices of char siu. Otherwise it would have been more redeeming. The rice again was mushy and way too soft. The onigiri was one of the worst I've ever had as the rice was definitely not good. The concept of the fillings were a good idea but not executed well. So, won't be back even though the staff was really exceptionally friendly.

The cart noodle ... fairly enjoyable for giving you a variety of choices to choose from all in a bowl of noodles. There are many such shops throughout Hong Kong. One is 榮記粉麵 (English name: Wing Kee Noodle). It's been here for a long time and has two locations in Causeway Bay. I honestly never ate here before and boyfriend couldn't recall why he never returned. So, we went in for quick bit. The place is very tiny and cramped. Menu is in Chinese with English upon request. There is no 10% service charge. Like many cart noodle places, you choose a noodle type and how many toppings you want for a certain price. We chose noodles plus two toppings for $38. Pretty cheap! I had the traditional fish bean curd and squid balls for my toppings. The soup for all their cart noodles is topped with beef brisket sauce. It was so salty and laced with MSG, my mouth almost cried in pain. I couldn't taste anything afterwards. The noodles were soggy. The squid balls had no real squid taste. The fish bean curd was soft but with the soup, you really can't taste it either. Boyfriend had the beef brisket and fish meat spring roll. The brisket was very soft but the entire thing was so salty you really can't taste anything else. The noodles for him was also soggy and over cooked. The fish meat spring roll felt like a sponge. Though portion was big, the food was not good at all. Way too salty that everything just felt like eating a bag of salt. Will not be back.

Aptia food court has many options. But it was this place called Cafe Restaurant Kobe Kitanozaka that caught our eye. Or more like the displays of the model food looked really pretty. Menu is in English, Japanese and Chinese. As it's a food court, there is no 10% service charge. They offer Japanese Western food that all can be created into sets. There are lots of to choose from and very flexible. They also had an offer for a Japanese Milk Pudding with Caramel Sauce for $5. Boyfriend ordered the Lasagna ($54) with the Fried Chicken and Corn Cream Soup Set ($12). The lasagna wasn't too good. It was just sliced up pieces of hard pasta with smear of tomato sauce and very minimal mince meat. At least it was cheesy. The fried chicken looked exactly like the display but it sadly had no seasoning at all. The meat was juicy but it had no flavour. The corn cream soup just felt like thickened corn starch with corn niblets throughout. I had the Chicken Doria ($56) with the Green Tea Tiramisu and drink set ($18). The doria was very cheesy. The chicken was neatly sliced into bite size pieces so you can just use a spoon to eat everything in one go. The chicken meat was juicy and tender. The rice was ok but there clearly wasn't enough tomato sauce. The cake was really terrible. It was dry and hard. No matcha taste at all. The cream was just not smooth but hard as well. As the pudding was $5, we each added one. It didn't look as appealing as the photo but surprisingly this was the best item from everything we ordered! A strong milk taste and smooth enough. The sauce was sweet. Goes to show, the cheapest is always the best. The food wasn't very good except for the pudding. At least it didn't look lazily slappe together. Won't be back.
