This is the kind of place I will bring a guest to "show off" how great the Hong Kong food scene is. Of course, the goose does not disappoint. Its crispy skin and succulent meat will amaze from the first to last bite. My preference is to have it with rice as the noodle soup will undermine both the crispy skin and taste. Another highlight is the soy chicken. This is a dish found on every street corner but what they serve here is far superior. I do not know what kind of magic they use to make the chicken so soft, almost tofu-like. The soy sauce is seasoned just right and goes amazing with a hot plate of rice.Not so great, however, was the char siu pork. I found the pork too dry and chewy. Ordered the handmade spaghetti with clam and white wine sauce. Was not impressed as the spaghetti was 'bloated' probably from overcooking and the sauce tasted more like plain soup more than anything. I came to this Cha Chang Teng as I was hungry for a quick breakfast and it was in a good location. The set menu is quite typical (set menu is not available in English but the a la cart is). Wow! I ordered beef on rice and could not be happier with with I got at this price. The beef was braised well and it came with yummy sweet soy sauce. The accompanying egg only adds to the sumptuousness of the dish. This restaurant gets busy at lunch time but it is not that well known. Went here to try the lunch set. The menu was very interesting with Asian and South American influence. Presentation was excellent too. The let down was the taste and the potion size. On the plate was half of what you would expect from a normal Hong Kong portion size. You will be hungry very soon after. I also found the coconut rice very contradictory with the bean curries. The afternoon tea set is just the right price at $50+ and not a cent more. The set I had consisted of some sushi, fried chicken, and udon soup. Quality of the sushi was nothing special and tasted quite bland. The udon soup was hot and nicely seasoned. Not many people around at this time too. I would recommend this small Japanese place for a takeaway lunch or dinner as there are limited seats. If you are craving for sushi/sashimi but have limited time or budget, this is the place to go. The menu is very simple. The base for almost every dish is salmon and tuna cubes seasoned with soy sauce served on sushi rice. You can choose what to add on top of this base. The a la carts offerings from this kind of restaurant are why people brand expensive food pretentious ($420 for 4 pieces of bite-sized lamb?!). Each of us had a starter and a main. This small ramen house serves a simple menu. I had the black garlic ramen with the thought that you cannot go wrong with putting more garlic. Really happy with the choice. I chose the noodle to be hard and it came a bit al dente. The soup was excellent, smooth and fragrant. Easily could have finished the soup. This legendary cafe serves everything you can imagine from a cha chan teng in its menu. But the most famous dish is of course the pork with tomato and rice in bread bowl served with some more curry sauce. This dish sets you back $70+ which is considered quite high for such an ordinary setting. It is obvious that decoration is not the chef's main concern as it was basically a bread bowl on a tray. The size is huge though. There is no way you could leave this place hungry after finishing this. Now on to the good. Pork chop was fairly tender and went well with the tomato sauce. I enjoyed the protein with the bread and almost entirely skipped the rice. The bread was crispy on the top part and was great with the pork. Yes, the hotpot was nice. The tomato soup was smooth and tangy and the mala spicy as expected. Beef and pork are of decent quality for the price. A wide variety of condiments are available for selection - I especially enjoyed the cheesy balls...yum. Many sauces for you to mix and match. All in all a decent hotpot.
