Only for coffee
Crema
2012-03-28
We got there at around 2:30pm on a Saturday and it was pretty packed, we scored a table in the middle of the store and was immediately handed a menu. They had a very simple menu with a variety of coffee, cakes on display and some mains like pasta and sandwiches. Prices were quite reasonable with afternoon tea sets for about $45HKD ($5.5AUD) you get a piece of cake or sandwich plus a coffee of your choice.Even though we didn’t expect the spaghetti to be top notch…we were quite disappointed by the pasta, it is quite obvious the sauce came out of a can and it had been diluted. The ham also had a weird ‘plasticy’ taste to me, thank gosh the pasta wasn’t overcooked if not it was have been an epic fail.Crema is known for their latte art Definitely impressed! I haven’t seen many places be able to produce such pretty lattes anywhere let alone HK ~ I wish I had known before and had asked for their famous ‘rabbit’, I saw it in other reviews that its extra cute! Mr Bao seemed to enjoy it and I had a sip and thought it was a pretty decent cup of coffee I wouldn’t say it was the more aromatic coffee I’ve had, but given the coffee standards here this was definitely at least an A ~I was so disappointed when my mocha came, I was expecting another amazing bear or rabbit…but nope because I ordered a mocha the barista didn’t think it was necessary to make it pretty. It tasted pretty good though ~ had a subtle coffee taste though not as strong as I like them.We started off with an Apple Pie Cake, basically large apple pie cut into cake slices ~ the tart crust was very thick and dry, quite hard for our fork to cut through. The filling was alright, quite sweet though even for me hahaha but Mr Bao and Mr T seemed to like it saying that it’s been a while since they’ve had an apple pie.I was quite surprised that this was a rather rich cheesecake, it had a thick digestive biscuit base, firm cream cheese layer then topped with a thin layer of sour cream ~ I’m pretty sure Crema don’t bake their own cake and get their cakes from a supplier and I’m certain I’ve had this cake before at another cafe lol it wasn’t the best cheesecake I’ve had, but for $38HK it was a decent piece of New York Cheesecake ~This was probably the most disappointing cake out of the three it had the same digestive biscuit cake base, then a layer of chocolate sponge cake, chocolate ganache another layer of sponge cake then the whole cake is covered in this hard chocolate ganache. The cake layers and ganache was so dry and hard that we couldn’t even pick it up with our forks. We didn’t even finish it…and that never happens I never waste cake >_<Verdict – Definitely go for their coffees and maybe a piece of cake, but bear in mind they’re not all good and don’t have high expectations of their savoury foods~…查看更多

Pleasant afternoon but bad service

I’ve realised that it’s also a High Tea marathon hehe because its one of the easiest ways to try lots of desserts at once and I’m also able to keep my friends happy who can’t just eat sweet food lol Intercontinental Hotel has one of the best views of the Victoria Harbour however, because of air pollution and constant fog… it’s hard to get a good clear view >_< but still it was really nice to be able to chat with a girlfriend and have some tea and cake ~I was actually supposed to have high tea here the weekend before, but when we got here at 2pm, they said the afternoon tea set didn’t start until 3:30pm…but I was sure I checked online that it said they open at 2pm, so instead of waiting we went to Coco Patisserie ~ So this time…I made sure I double checked online and also called that on weekdays the high tea starts at 2:30pm. They suggested that we get there at around 2pm because it was always ‘full’. So we got there at 2pm and even though the Lobby Lounge was empty and we were asked to wait outside and come back at 2:3opm. That kind of bothers me… because I think they should have allowed us to sit down and not make us wait for no apparent reason. They have 3 types of afternoon tea sets – Champagne, Intercontinental and The Red Box. Kaylee and I both agreed that the Chinese infused Red Box high tea was too weird for our liking and neither of us wanted to drink so we settled for the Intercontinental Tea Set.We also ordered English breakfast tea I know there’s other types of teas that’s wonderful but I still think the plain old English breakfast is the best for high tea!As per usual, we were both ravenous and started with the savouries first There was two of each hehe starting from the left there’s a mini bun with eggs and herbs, then a extremely miniature bagel so damn cute! Little pastrami bun and last but not least a ham and cheese pastry ~ we enjoyed the savouries, however, I didn’t like the first mini bun with eggs and herbs, I’m not sure what cream they used…but it had a really strange after taste I think another reason why I like high tea is because of the scones I totally heart scones ~ particularly liked how they were served it in a little basket and wrapped in a towel to keep them nice and warm ~ they weren’t just plain and raisons scones. The one with the little one dots on the right is a lemon one.The strawberry jam and clotted cream weren’t spectacular, but I really liked the Earl Grey Jelly I never thought I would because I’m not really an Earl Grey kind of girl lol but I really liked this jelly and thought it matched the scones ~Oops think I forgot to take a close up of the desserts Sorry I don’t like how they only have one piece of every cake LOL I think it would have been more generous if they gave us two pieces of each ~ starting from the left it’s a vanilla and lemon eclair with a little piece of pineapple, I didn’t mind it and thought the choux pastry was made very well. Then we’ve got an apple and coconut tart, quite nice and really liked the stewed apple on top. Then its the chocolate layer cake with raspberry/strawberry mousse, it was slightly bitter I think because of the dark chocolate ~ my favourite would have to be the lemon cheesecake It wasn’t that rich or dense but really light. The last one on the right is a raspberry sponge cake with a raspberry compote in between ~ It reminded me of a lamington heheIt was a lovely surprise when a waiter came over and popped down two chocolate panna cotta and said that it was complimentary with the afternoon tea set ~ I don’t usually like panna cotta but this was so smooth and creamy!I’ve heard that you’re can order a la carte desserts ~ so I couldn’t help but order the lemon tart Overall, I enjoyed the afternoon tea set at Intercontinental and would recommend you coming for the amazing harbour view However, service wasn’t great for a five-star hotel and unless you like the lolly flavour maybe stay away from the lemon tart …查看更多

Hidden Surprise definitely worth trying!
Gioia by Chi
2012-02-20
It’s quite easy to miss Gioia By Chi because it’s tucked in a small street in Kowloon City and its surrounded by pet stores and mechanics…it took me, a good 5 minutes to find it, even though we’re quite familiar with this area Gioia By Chi don’t have a website (I know it’s strange) only a Facebook page, so I wasn’t able to find much information about them, It was really quiet when we got there yesterday at 3pm, I immediately felt at home looking around at all the pretty cakes in the cabinet heheThey don’t have a large selection of cakes or pastries, but it was enough for me, they had a couple of ’large’ cakes for sale and the rest were little individual pieces Perfect for me! I wanted to try everything ~We started with the Lemon Tart and I thought it was an absolute bargain because it was only $23HKD, most patisseries in HK are charging over $35 for a lemon tart. As for the taste, I really liked it, the shortbread pastry case was made well, not too crumbly. The lemon filling was a little tangy and a little sour for some, while I liked it ~ Maybe not as good as the one at L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon, but considering the price and the convenient location it’s probably one of the best lemon tarts you can find in Kowloon The next was the Raspberry Cheesecake, because I love cheesecakes ~ and we were both surprised at how rich and dense this cheesecake was I’m sure you’ve heard me complain before that cakes in HK are usually lighter and uses less sugar. While this wasn’t a really sweet cheesecake, for once we could actually ‘taste’ the cream cheese! Well done Gioia for taking the risk and making a rich cake we thought it was so good, that it was close to the Mandarin Oriental New York cheesecake, which is well-known in HK for their cheesecakesI’m nuts about NUTS lol if you know what I mean One of my favourite would have to be hazelnuts, so I insisted that we try this ~ the bottom layer was a hazelnut sable, quite nice but would have been better if it had more crushed hazelnuts to give it a crunch. The middle layer was a dark chocolate ganache, yummy even though my sister thought it was a little ‘rich’, then it was a thin layer of milk chocolate and topped with hazelnut flavoured whipped cream. Only thing I didn’t like about the cake, was the whipped cream, I find it a little unnecessary and I couldn’t really taste the ‘hazelnut’ flavour.Gioia by Chi was definitely a hidden surprise for me and has immediately become my new favourite place to hang out , I highly recommend it to everyone in the area or those who like a ‘rich’ piece of cheesecake …查看更多

Weird buttercream
Kisses Cupcakes
2012-02-18
I decided to go on a Cupcake Search in HK, that’s when I found Kisses Cupcakes that recently opened in the Soho area.It was a small store, with a couple of tables for customers to enjoy the cupcakes and a cup of coffee. The lady behind the counter was really nice and told me that they’ve only been open 6 weeks and they are from New York City and work with Chikalicious (dessert bar) to create their cupcakes We got a 6 pack and chose the following flavours – Almond, Triple Chocolate, S’mores, Strawberry, Red Velvet and Mocha ~ They have a wide range of flavours and some unique ones such as lychee and Ferrero Rocher (which had sold out that day).Almonds are one of my favourite type of nuts, and I hadn’t come across many almond flavoured cupcakes, so was interested to try. It was a simple butter cupcakes flavoured with almond extract and topped with vanilla buttercream and toasted almond flakes. I like the topping but found the cupcake itself to be a little dry and bland, I would have preferred a stronger almond flavour. The mocha cupcake on the right didn’t give us the ‘wow’ factor, once again the cake itself was dry and I simply couldn’t taste the chocolate or coffee flavour… the butter cream was also a weird consistency, in between runny and creamy.Very much the same with the triple chocolate, but this time the cupcake wasn’t as dry, because of the ganache they’ve put inside the cupcake ~ I still can’t quite describe their buttercream… it’s a very unique texture… I don’t think I’ve had this type of buttercream before, it’s very watery and felt like it needed some more icing sugar to thicken it and made it a little sweeter ~ or maybe that’s just me and my HUGE sweet tooth.I have a thing for Red Velvet cupcakes…but this was by far the worse cupcake out of them all. The cupcake was the driest, you could barely taste the vanilla and cocoa flavour, and the worse was the buttercream, not only the was texture strange…you couldn’t taste any cream cheese in the frosting! So that was a major disappointment I’m sorry, but, I don’t think I’ll be going back to Kisses Cupcakes anytime soon…mainly because of the dry cake but most importantly the buttercream. With that my search for the best cupcake in HK continues ~ my lovely readers if you have any suggestions please let me know!…查看更多

Ilovehongkong I am not a huge fan of sweetness and cupcakes, but I tried their cupcakes last week -- I like their buttercream though, like you mentioned smooth and creamy .. it is totally the opposite of the typical sweet icing that cupcakes usually have. I guess different people has different taste opinions on that~

DaisyNTSFM Hello there ~ I guess you're right everyone has their own tastes and opinions and unfortunately they just weren't my type of cupcakes and maybe it's because I'm from Australia hahaha and I like really 'sweet' and thick buttercream But i'm glad you enjoyed their cupcakes ~

18 Grams
2012-02-12
I have found another good place for coffee in Hong Kong - 18 Grams YAY! I've noticed lately more coffee shops and cafes have popped open on the Kowloon side where I live, which is great!I haven't been able to find out much information about 18 Grams, it kinda intrigues me why they have called their shop 18 Grams and not 28 Grams? Hmmm...I don't really know much about coffee making but does 18 grams have any significance to making a good cup of coffee?Anyhow, I do know 18 Grams is a local company and their barista Ed Lam had recently won at Coffee Roasting Competition held in Guangzhou. They now have 3 stores across HK - Causeway Bay, Mongkok and Tsim Sha Tsui ~ but Mong Kok is their largest store and probably the most comfortable ~I've heard good things about 18 Grams so on a nice sunny afternoon, I dragged Sasa out of bed at 1pm lol early for our standards and got there at around 2pm. The cafe was basically empty, and were told we can sit where ever we wanted ~ they didn't give us a menu but had a large menu next to the cash register, where you ordered and paid.Aussie Breakfast $98HKD ($12AUD)It's basically the 'Big Breakfast' we call in Australia, with scrambled eggs, baked beans, sausages, bacon, tomatoes, baked beans and toast ~ The scrambled eggs were cooked nicely, where it was that great smooth consistency. The sausages were a little 'gamy' for my liking but Sasa thought they were okay and the bacon just wasn't what I'm use to home...I've found the bacon here is like a cross between ham and bacon Eggs Benedict $72HKD ($8.7AUD)My friend loves poached eggs so without a doubt, she got the Eggs Benedict ~ the muffins were lightly toasted, topped with gammon ham, spinach, poached eggs and finished with hollandaise sauce. I tried it and thought it was pretty good I can be quite picky about hollandaise sauce but I enjoyed theirs as it had a good balance of butter and lemon.Mocha $32HKD ($3.8AUD)I wouldn't call myself an avid coffee drinker because most of the time I just drink Mocha hahaha But I know what mochas make me smile ~ and this definitely did The coffee had an fantastic aroma and the barista mixed it with the appropriate amount of chocolate, to ensure that it wasn't overpowering the coffee or vice versa. Yummy ~ I might go back on Monday haven't had good coffees in the past week or so Ice Caffe Mocha $34HKD ($4.1AUD)My friend ordered the Ice Caffe Mocha tasted like mine, however, the chocolate and coffee wasn't really mixed thoroughly so it was like the chocolate was at the bottom, then the coffee, then the milk. Both good but I think I enjoyed my mocha a little more They also have a range of desserts such as homemade tiramisu, New York Cheesecake and their Not Quite Brownie "Brownie" which I'd love to try next time ~18 Grams is definitely a great place to hang out with friends, especially since food is nice and reasonably priced. Plus an added bonus would be the fact they don't have a 10% service charge like most places in HK woo hoo!Go check it out when you have the chance and if you find out why they're called 18 Grams please let me know!…查看更多

sowing7 They use 18Grams portafilter to make their coffee each time, a standard that not everyone employs in HK. This would result in more consistent coffee shot after shot.

Family Chinese New Year Tradition
嘉湖
2012-01-24
We have a slightly strange tradition in my family because we eat Zong Zi (粽子) for CNY, I think it’s because my Dad’s family originated from the Northern side of China and it’s a tradition there. Zong Zi’s are glutinous rice with a filling and then wrapped in bamboo leaves Zong zi’s are usually eaten during Dragon Boat Festival but somehow, it’s been a long standing tradition in my family. These are zong zi’s are amazing, with a piece of pork and salted duck eggs on each side of the zong zi!! It’s so rare that we get to eat these zong zi because we have to order them before hand and its quite expensive too $34HKD for one little zong zi ~ but it’s so so so worth it! For those in HK I’ve also included the name and number of the place where you can order these zong zi from.Definitely worth trying!…查看更多

Monster Sushi
2012-01-07
I had dinner at the Tsim Sha Tsui branch the other night, because a friend was visiting from Malaysia and she really wanted to try the authentic Japanese food in HK. I don’t know when it started but Honkie people are obsessed with food and everything from Japan. So HK is known to have pretty good quality Japanese food with some Honkie influences hehe.I’ve heard good things about Monster Sushi and thought it would be a good place to bring my friend but I was so utterly disappointed…We ordered a variety of sushi – salmon, tuna, unagi, salmon roe, sea urchin and soft shell crab the lighting was pretty bad so I wasn’t able to take very good pictures. And even though the sushi may look good…it really didn’t taste that good…the rice was very cold (too cold for my liking) and very hard! It was obvious the rice had been cooked way ahead in time and must have been kept in the fridge and it wasn’t thawed properly before it was used I wouldn’t recommend anyone going unless you have a discount coupon or you don’t have a choice, because there are too many other good sushi places in HK ~…查看更多
