Exciting Tea Surprise

We tried the new afternoon tea set at Feast,  East Weekend Afternoon Tea with a floral twist a few days ago. It was a delightful surprise.We had thought Feast a good place to chill for its high ceilings, smart décor, cleanliness and convenient location despite our not so extraordinary dining experiences before but this visit was a pleasant surprise to us. The food tasted new and exciting.For the tea set, they had nine items—four savories, four sweets and fruity scone. We three had the Illy coffee this time but they also offered two special sweet teas and the standard Twinings tea.All four savories were delicious. We thought the Goose Liver Crème Brûlée with puffy pastry toast was special because it wasn't greasy like the pan-fried foie gras nor did it have the queer raw taste. It was simply savory. Their Lobster Brioche and Scallop Tartlet were well prepared and so was the refreshing Beet Pesto Crostini.The Fruity Scone was a bit crumbly but fine with strawberry jam and clotted cream.Then we devoured the lovely desserts.  The Lychee Rose Chiffon was fragrant and the zesty and rich Triple Cheese Cake with lemon cheese mousse and fromage blanc cream was exciting. The sharp looking Blueberry Butterfly Pea Tart with butterfly pea Chantilly cream and fresh blueberry was lovely. Lastly, Cherry Blossom Macaron with green tea ganache and strawberry jam was a surprise to me. The salty cherry blossom on top with macaron crust and the rich filling went surprisingly well.The food quality had improved from our last visit from decent to excellent with good service as always. …查看更多

Impeccably Fine Chef's Lunch Set

I chose Cusine Cusine Chef’s Lunch Set to celebrate my birthday with parents and for their appealing menu as I didn’t think I had tried sea cucumber soup before. Moreover, I was attracted by their interior design and really wanted to see it up close. It’s modern yet opulent with the rich jade green carpet, mahogany tables and the mesmerizing glass bubbles hanging from the ceiling. Our lunch started out well with delicious amuse-bouches Black fungus in vinegar with pepper and Marinated tofu.For our chef’s lunch set, the 3 appetizers Honey-glazed barbecued pork, Crispy taro puff with diced chicken and foie gras and Chilled jelly fish with spring onions and sesame were perfect to go with a glass of wine. My mom loved the taro puff the most and dad was delighted with the jelly fish.Here’s my much anticipated Double-boiled sea cucumber soup with snow lotus seeds and black garlic. It was a really tasty consommé. I was such a bumpkin that I had never heard that it took time to prepare black garlic and it’s sweet and pungent.After the  soup came a stronger tasting dish Wok-fried beef with basil and mushrooms in chili sauce. Meat was tender and the dish smelt so tantalizing.Alternatively, a lighter tasting dish Braised bean curd sheets with mushrooms in abalone jus was served.To ensure we would be full, we could either choose fried rice or dan dan noodles. I had dan dan noodles and liked the not too thick nor watery spicy soup. It was quite spicy but not enough to get you a runny nose. And the pan-fried foie gras with fried rice was delicious. A meal wouldn’t be complete without dessert, then there came the Chilled champagne jelly and mango pudding topped with pomelo and sago in coconut juice (香檳啫喱芒果布甸配椰汁柚子西米露). It was presented nicely with dry ice encased in the glass cover. It was so beautiful and fun even though my dad wasn’t too thrilled with this dramatic interlude. Nevertheless the desserts were just as tasty. The champagne jelly with berry purée was a little treat ontop of the mango pudding concocted with a balanced firmness and sago with coconut juice had always been one of my favorite desserts.Every single dish and item was delicious and service was impeccable with many servers in sight while tables are spaced appropriately. All in all, we enjoyed our lunch very much and I was glad to see my parents delighted. The three of us celebrated our October birthdays at Cé La Vi for brunch this year. We chose it because it was a nice venue on the top floor of California Tower in Lan Kwai Fong with sky view where we could explore, eat and spend our afternoon idly catching up.I arrived earliest so I got a few minutes to feel the place and took a few pictures. It was a little daring and disconcerting to walk downstairs to the restaurant level and up again to the restroom because the stairs were steep.  I would avoid high heels and be comfortable with sneakers.As we were seated right in front of the terrace, we could brace the breeze and open sky and chill happily nibbling a variety of shareable food and chit-chatting. Instead of having free-flow champagne, we opted for the juice and soda option which was cheaper and healthier. The brunch came with unlimited supply of Seafood, Sushi & Sashimi Platter and Entrées (we were served Salad, Miso Soup, Tempura Platter, Vegetable Fried Rice and Egg Benedict by default)  and each could choose a main course and each completed the meal with Dessert Trio. We shared our mains Scallop and Prawn, Seared Snapper and Pork Katsu and I liked my sautéed Scallop and Prawn with mushroom and fried rice.Lastly, the gorgeous and painterly dessert platter. Food was good and we enjoyed the laid-back ambience of the lovely open sky and interesting Central roofs with a lot of food and seafood! Feast for the Eyes Afternoon Tea

We had a lovely time at Popinjays, the roof top restaurant at The Murray for afternoon tea last Friday. From the appointed decoration of furnishings, colorful wall paintings and crockery, down to the beautiful blue feather menu cover design and thoughtful food presentation, every detail was feast for the eyes.On the food, their savories were all lovely. No queer foie gras but there were the memorable Blue Lobster Tartlet with apple rémoulade with texture tasting like jelly and crispy crust. The Curry Chicken Choux and Cavier Blini were also memorable.The sweets looked gorgeous on a pink marble slab. We liked their Macarons the most simply because the crust was as light and thin as the original macaron maker’s and the violet mascarpone filling was delightfully refreshing. Even the chocolate tart was sensational with popping candy that exploded in your mouth. Everything had interesting textures.The scones on the other hand were disappointing. Even though they hand whipped the cream in front of you with a choice of citrus cream with Cointreau or chocolate with rum which tasted heavenly, the plain and hazelnut scones tasted too milky like milk powder. It seemed that this hotel liked to experiment with their scone recipe—I’ve had scones at their Garden Lounge twice and didn’t quite like the herb ones.There was also a take-home Easter egg at the end of the meal for a little surprise.Service wasn’t entirely smooth with initial seating as guests that arrived earlier were not seated chronologically. We were forced to listen to the server’s verbose introduction of food when there was a menu and we really preferred to have the drink before the food even though we were provided with a glass of water. They did however offer to refill our tea without asking.All in all, food was still impressive and they did a great job on crust and pastries, but their scones and hospitality need to be improved for afternoon tea guests.…查看更多

For a little irony in life, we spent the following day of SAR Establishment Day at Heritage Parlour, the former colonial marine police building,  for a colonial pastime to enjoy afternoon tea.Indeed, the afternoon tea set was outstanding as far as the menu, ambience, service, and setting went. The menu was very complete and appetizing. We started with garden salad and toasted sandwiches on top, then savory pastries like Wellington Beef, Lobster Vol-au-Vent and Samosa in the middle and finally sweets and scones. We took our time as the portion was filling and substantial, not bite-sized nor airy, but actually yummy. I liked the Grilled Parma Ham and Cheese Finger Sandwich the most for savory and sweets Mango Napoleon with Gold Flakes.This was really a perfect place to spend a slow and relaxing afternoon with tea time stretched from 2:30 pm till 5:30 pm in a historical architecture with high ceiling, colonial style wallpaper and nice garden view. We sat indoor to avoid the summer heat and the tables were spaced spaciously.Overall, it's good value with pleasant service and spacious tables; if the background music is instrumental rather than sung, it would even be better.…查看更多

After hearing from many sources that Café Malacca was arguably the most authentic Malaysian restaurant in town, mom and I went to try their afternoon tea set on a Sunday which included four savories and three desserts with a choice of tea or coffee.It was easy to get to Hotel Jen as it is right on the left of Hong Kong University Station exit B2. The atmosphere was laid back and was not busy. It was a little weird that we were given an English afternoon tea set menu and a Chinese a la carte menu.  Once we ordered, the food came fairly quickly.We enjoyed the food very much. We like Chwee Kueh (水粿) for savory and Durian Pudding for sweet the most. The Kaya toast was not the version we were used to as we preferred the sauce not to be sandwiched with a big slice of butter that took away the Kaya's aroma.As expected, Mom ordered takeaway food afterwards of Malaysian Chicken Curry with rice and generous amount of sauce, Kuala Lumpur Hokkien Char with really yummy KL dark soy sauce noodle and Naisi Lemak with fragrant coconut rice.…查看更多

We had a rewarding afternoon tea at Garden Lounge on a public holiday. We initially were not too impressed by the menu but visiting a new hotel and facilities was a fun activity so we booked this a month in advance to plan on a rendezvous when both of us were free.We liked the spare and elegant setting and the overall experience turned out exquisite. The menu looked traditional without much hint on the twists but once they were presented neatly, you could see from the food that they were sophisticated and exquisite. The tomato biscuit not shown on the menu was a delightful surprise. The scones also had different flavors with spices like cardamom and fennel seeds for European palates.We loved dainty food and presentation and live piano. I had a very busy day running errands and seeing a movie the entire day that when I finally had time for a sit-down meal, it was already half past four. Amidst the hustle and bustle of Causeway Bay, I thought it would be easier to get an afternoon tea set at the Excelsior so I dashed to Café on the 1st and asked the reception if they had afternoon tea set for one. Didn't even bother to check the menu, I ordered a set and a pot of Earl Grey tea.The food was really delicious and I liked the squid crostini for being different. The desserts were all really yummy and there were a lot of chocolate items, even a chocolaty custard puff. There were the usual scones but also a mini Portuguese egg tart. I didn't realize it was Café on the 1st X Weiss Chocolate afternoon tea crossover until I looked up their Instagram account later.Even though it was more expensive for one person,  it was a nice treat with pleasant service and the best thing was it was not too crowded.…查看更多

"Feel Like a Queen with the Crown Royal—tea by Annoushka" on Hong Kong Labor Day was ironic and iconic a rendezvous I was eager to experience.Without further ado, let's talk about the experience. The place was magnificent, the scent evoked a lot of memories and the opulently decorated lobby was just as I remembered. Nevertheless, seating was terrible and its was the reason why I hadn't been back for years as it was a noisy place with low ceiling.I felt bad to dismiss it like this as MO was where I had my first scones with Devon cream. Indeed, the scones were good and their famous rose petal jam was still the best in town. Nevertheless, other food items didn't stand out and the presentation was disappointing. They weren't as delicate as I would have anticipated and especially for a crossover with luxurious jewelry brand Annoushka, food was like a birthday party you would have thrown for your little darling princess with cookies and a lot of icing; rather juvenile.The sad truth was you know you couldn't pretend to feel like a queen when the irony was so loud. You couldn't feel like a queen and be composed when the place was so crowded and noisy and tables were placed so closely together that you could hear your neighbors' conversations without efforts. It was very annoying.In terms of service, the experienced servers were attentive but it was not fun to hear the supervisor teaching the trainee how to set a table within our ear shot after he rearranged the crockery for us.Overall, it's likely a spot for tourists and businessmen for afternoon tea but definitely not a place to relax and enjoy a cup of tea—we went to the wrong place.…查看更多

A Lovely Cantonese Style Afternoon Tea Ruined

It has been well-known to us that food at Hotel Icon is usually good but service has been inconsistent. Indeed, the afternoon tea set we tried at Above & Beyond with Cantonese twist could have been very special if not for the negligent service that ruined our experience entirely.For the afternoon tea set, we were greeted with a glass of sparkling wine overlooking Hong Kong's coastline. The tune and mood were very relaxing as we were among the first there and were happy with our choice of tea too. However, as tables next to us started to get served with their afternoon tea set on a wooden stand and eating their dim sum while people that came after us were also being served; coupled with the footsteps and high heels of servers walking to and fro behind us on the long wooden floor, the agitating pace just crept in as we were left behind waiting to be served.We could hear the manager telling the servers our Table 2 was missing the set behind us so we thought the issue could be corrected soon and our set did come soon after but all dim sum steamers were still directed to serve tables that came thirty minutes later than us. As our dim sum was still not available and I could see our nearby tables finished their dim sums and the bamboo steamers removed from their tables, I had to request mine but was told that their Kitchen was still steaming them—they missed and neglected our table again!Throughout the meal, I tried to appreciate the food and keep my temper in check but it was the worst afternoon tea I had ever experienced. Even though I had civilly let the manager know of our displeasure and he promptly apologized, our mood was spoiled. In spite of courteous servers, service was terrible. It was the most disquieting and upsetting afternoon tea I have ever had—they robbed me an afternoon of quietude.…查看更多

Lovely Chinese Afternoon Tea Set

We had a little excursion going to Kerry Hotel for a lovely afternoon tea last Saturday because we took a 15-minute ferry ride at North Point Ferry Pier to cross the harbor. The new hotel was right in front of us as we disembarked. We couldn’t help but marvel at this piece of land and as we took the escalator up to enter at the side of the hotel, the harbor view and open space were all mesmerizing and tranquil. We were seated indoors in the spacious Lobby Lounge with high ceiling and glass panels looking out into the open sky and greenery. We had this lovely Chinese Afternoon Tea Set with many tea infused delicacies made from mostly oolong tea from Taiwanese Ri Yang Teayard. The menu was well designed with half savory and half sweet items and all were very tasty. We loved the presentation with tidbits sitting on a glass panel of a wooden tray box with see-through pebbles. It was oriental modern and blended so well with the theme and surroundings. We liked the gimmick of using dry ice to create the airy atmosphere for the Hokkaido Cheese Tart with Bird Nest. For savories, the appealing Blue Swimmer Crab, Chive Aioli, Charcoal Brioche Bun was really delectable and the Cha Kwo Dumpling was especially Chinese. For desserts, I liked the cheese tart and  Milky Chocolate and Oolong Tea Sphere with peach filling the most. I had Alisha Oolong and my friend a lighter Oriental Beauty for our pot of tea choices. It was simply good service to have Beverage with Refill and the servers were all very pleasant.  In brief, this was a very good-value afternoon tea set for its variety, tastiness, great ambiance and service even though it was walk-in only on weekends. Festive and Sweet Afternoon Tea

We celebrated the new year with Festive Afternoon Tea at The Lounge with additional selection from the dessert table. It was indeed an irresistible feast for any dessert monster. As we were seated closely next to the dessert table, I was free to hover around it and take pictures. We liked that the table and seats were spacious and there was live piano.It was a bit strange that they had a menu for additional dessert items and tea options but no details on the set. The scones were tasty with crispy crust but rather large if you wanted to try the additional 17 selections. I managed to try and share a few of the dessert items with my sister. Personally I liked the 2018 churros and their tiramisu was delicious with liquor, mascarpone cream and lady finger bites. Overall, food tasted fine but wasn’t too exciting and service wasn’t too attentive as you needed to request hot refill for your pots of tea instead of being automatically served. …查看更多

Seafood Feast with a View

Originally we planned to have in-room dining but after realizing we had hotel guest discount, my mom was lured to leave our suite to dine at Cucina even when we were not exactly hungry. We had window seats and the dazzling night view of Victoria Harbour was fabulous. I had a glass of Prosecco and Mom a mocktail Basil Smash which was tasty with orange, basil, raspberry, and pineapple. When they served us a basketful of grissini and warm and crispy and soft wheat bread, my bread person mom was very happy. For mains, I had been craving for lobster so I had Grilled Whole Boston Lobster with Garlic Buttered Sauce (26 oz) and Mom had Cucina's signature dish Linguine with Sicilian Red Prawns. The lobster was meaty and delicious despite me getting a bit messy having to eat it with hands and the prawn dish smelt really good plus pasta texture was al dente with lots of prawn au jus. We had a wonderful dining time here sharing our food and view of the fabulous Victoria Harbour. Part of the reason we decided to try this special menu Exotic Summer Afternoon Tea last Saturday was because of its fruity menu and part of it was because it was held at Whisk on Saturdays. We arrived a little early and were seated at the aisle with many glass bubble lights at the side shimmering by natural lighting. The seats and tables were spacious and relaxing. Onto the delicate tidbits--they were seductive and refreshing as it featured many tropical fruits from French Reunion Island. My favorite savory was Gazpacho Chilled Avocado Soup with Seared Chipotle Shrimp. It wasn't that chilled but tasted smooth and refreshing. For sweets, my favorite was Victoria Pineapple, Combawa from Reunion Island and Coconut Cupcake as the cake was buttery and moist while the pineapple inside and the cream with a hint of combawa were all together unique and refreshingly delightful. For drink, we had the thirst quenching summer special drink Lemongrass Infused Pineapple. ​ Enchanting Iittala X FINDS Afternoon Tea

We really enjoyed the Iittala X FINDS Afternoon Tea celebrating Finland 100 years with 10 different Finland inspired treats last Sunday. The Nordic Summer theme in the restaurant's décor was inviting with calming olive-green chairs and curvilinear wood fixtures in the ceilings. With the iconic Marimekko peony covers scattered in the seating area, they set the tone for a light-hearted Finnish afternoon. It was also a visual feast when they presented the colorful tidbits on the deep blue Iittala ceramic tray and tin box decorated with Taika motifs as Taika means magic in Finnish; it was stunning and mesmerizing.  Food was tasty yet ironically felt very healthy. We liked the buttery mashed potato on top of the moist and cheesy spinach and crispy crust. The sweets were lovely too. There seemed to be a lot of different kinds of berries: raspberry, cranberry, lingonberry, and cloudberry. We liked Oatmeal & Cranberry Crunch, which tasted like scones but had a crispier crust and fuller but healthier texture and we enjoyed the freshly baked Cinnamon Custard Roll. In terms of their decadent sweets, my favorite was Lingonberry Tart with custard and served with biscuit crumbs and lingonberries. The only tidbits that tasted a bit funny was the Baked Lapland Cheese with Cloudberry Sauce which was a tiny cube with spongy texture and sour sauce. For refreshments, I had a cup of cappucino while my friend had a 62% dark hot chocalate that was garnished with lovely meringue morsels. Although food portion was enough for us girls, guys may need a glass of champagne to fill themselves up a little.  Service was pleasant and thoughtful too. We were offered the choice of cold or warm water promptly and our glass was refilled repeatedly. We enjoyed this little gastronomic adventure of Nordic culture.
