We came here at around 9pm to find that there was a herd of customers in line buying take-out. The shop itself is surprisingly tiny. There are literally three stools for customers to 'dine-in' but there is actually only space for two as the table is constructed badly. Anyway back to the food....
As the title of this review says, they had sold out of mille-feuille AND the creme brulee by the time the lady in the shop served us so we decided on the following:
Craquelin au chocolat
This was a very rich chocolate cake with a crispy base. I kept wondering how they kept the bottom so light and crunchy when the top part was so dense and intense in chocolate flavour?
The base held a very strong hazelnut/praline flavour and had a very good crisp crunch, like those gavotte cookies, but a little more dense. The outer layer was a shiny chocolate ganache whilst the filling tasted of even richer and sweeter chocolate. Overall a very indulgent piece of cake. The size is perfect for this type of cake! We actually couldn't finish it.
Strawberry and vanilla tart
This dessert can only be described as this: A VERY very dense and crunchy tart with a thin layer of vanilla pastry cream, sliced strawberries with a gelatin glaze.
The tart itself was almost impossible to eat with the provided plastic forks alone. I had to ask for a knife, but they gave me a butter knife (no ridges whatsoever) which only helped a bit. I couldn't cut it! So the only way to eat it was to eat the strawberries on top then use my hands to hold up the tart shell and bite! The best part of this dessert was probably the tart because of its taste - fresh, crunchy (like a hard biscuit but good) and just enough butter.
My complaint would have to lie with the vanilla cream - there was so little of it you could barely taste it! At $30 per small tart you would expect quality strawberries and quality pastry creme - those which you can see the vanilla beans being used!
From this experience, I would recommend their craquelin au chocola for a really good and indulgent piece of cake, and the strawberry tart only if you love hard and crunchy tart bases and don't mind eating with your hand!
