Chibi Maruko Cha is a Japanese manga character about a girl and her life in Shimizu, Japan that is based on the author's (Momoko Sakura) life as a child. It's an extremely popular manga that was later adapted into an anime series with translations in several languages including English and Chinese. And when the author passed away earlier this year of breast cancer, fans all over the world mourned. But though the author has passed away, the series lives on. And Teawood has come up with a pop-up
But though the author has passed away, the series lives on. And Teawood has come up with a pop-up theme restaurant. And with any theme restaurant, I try to go! Teawood has decorated three of it's restaurants with a different Chibi Maruko Chan theme: Causeway Bay's WTC (Ocean theme), Mong Kok's King Wah Center (Sakura theme) and Megabox (Gift Box theme).
As I live near Causeway Bay, I went to the WTC one with boyfriend who was good enough to amuse me in this. The front of the restaurant was decorated with Maruko.
The inside of the restaurant was nicely decorated with the characters in all in "ocean" style clothes on all the walls and windows. They even played the animation theme song in the background!
There was even a corner to take a photo of her! Oh man! Her dress was so pretty.
They had a souvenir corner. If you loved the plates they used, you can buy it here. They also sold cookies and pineapple cakes.
They also sold a gift set that costs $238 which includes a ferris wheel of cookies, pineapple cake and a jar of almond sticks all in a cute little bag that looks like her dress!
They even have an AR game if you have the Teawood app. This was fun to play with.
What was the most impressive is they not only made a special menu with the character but their regular menu is also revamped with the theme. There is a story inside (though in Chinese only) but it's sweet. It also said if you want the menu, you can purchase that as well. I've been to a lot of pop-up restaurants and this is the first one I've been where they really go all out on the theme. I'm impressed at all the effort done!
But with every theme restaurant, there is theme food. That is found in the special menu card. Menu is in English and Chinese.
Hanawa Kazuhiko Rose Latte ($38). I ordered the rose latte and it came in a cup with Hanawa Kazuhiko. The rich boy the manga who has a crush on Maruko. The drink was not too bad. Not too sweet but you could still taste a bit of rose.
Tomozou Sakura Matcha au Lait ($38). Boyfriend ordered this and he liked it. I felt it was a bit too sweet but it was perfect for him. There was a bit of matcha taste but not a lot. It says Mocha on the menu in English but in Chinese it says matcha. The matcha is correct.
Chibi Maruko Chan Rice with Marinated Minced Pork and Eel in Tomato Sauce ($128). This was super cute. The rice was topped with some sugar fondant which of Maruko. This we shoved aside and I think it was more for decoration. The tomato sauce was really sweet. It was pretty delicious. Rich but a bit too much on the sweet side. The eel was soft and tender wit no odd fishy taste that I sometimes find in some places.
Tamae Honami Pumpkin and Seafood Combo ($138). This was a little bit of everything. There were deep fried squid balls, deep fried fish sticks and a mini pumpkin stuffed with lobster meat, mussels, clams and squid. All smothered in a sweet pumpkin sauce. There was some seaweed on the side but it wasn't flavored. The seafood was fresh and I loved the sauce they used. It was sweet and rich. The squid balls were super dry. But the fish sticks were the best. The coating wasn't too thick but still crunchy. The fish meat was moist.
I discovered they shaped the vegetables with the characters from the manga!
Chibi Maruko Chan Hotcakes ($88). We decided (or more like I decided) as we were here for theme, we might as well have dessert! This is the hotcakes. It's made to look like the Maruko is hanging at the beach. So they have seared her face onto the hotcakes. The sand is some sort of crushed cereal. There are strawberries on top of banana slices and a bit of whipped cream topped with diced kiwi. The "water" was actually blue colored frosting that makes your teeth go blue. Very creative. But the hotcakes were dry. At least they weren't hard.
The theme food was mostly good though the hotcakes weren't that great. But the restaurant did put a lot of effort in designing a menu along with decorating the entire restaurant. I've been to many where they don't put much effort at all in a pop-up theme. So, this was really appreciated and great for fans of the character. Definitely worth a try before the theme ends if you are a fan.
