To celebrate the most important Chinese festival of the year, Winter Solstic, we have decided to go off the beaten track and the crowd to enjoy some scrumptious modern Japanese cuisine in New Town Plaza, Sha Tin. The mall was jam packed with families look for places to eat and tourists, of course. After some bumping and elbows, we have finally arrived the ground floor for something to eat, where all the restaurants located. Most of the restaurants here are open faced and Yaki ANA took no exception.
Yaki ANA seating was comfortable with privacy, condering the very practical size of the restaurant, as well as the big crowd from the mall.
Although the restaurant has a fairly big menu, the staff were all very helpful and familiar with the food items. So do feel free to ask them for suggestions and I am sure they would be able to give you some hands.
After some discussions, we have made up our minds to go for some salad, fresh grills, sushi rolls, some meat and seafood items, with the ending of some nice desserts.
Assorted Sashimi Salad ($79)
The assorted sashimi includes salmon, tuna, and snapper, dressed with light sasame sauce. The salad contains mainly lettuce, cucumber, and cherry tomato. Everything was fresh and crispy. Better consume fast before the veggies got wilted.
Yuzu vinegar was such an appetising dressing to enjoy as a starter. There were 8 thin sliced amberjack sashimi in total, topped with generous amount of sasame seeds and dressing, Sided with some more fresh veggie salad.
This starter was light for a heavy meal, it is also a very cool looking dish to share among friends.
Not an uncommon combination nowadays. The eel was not heavily marinated which I liked. However, the amount of cream cheese was a bit too much for the size of the sushi rolls, it made the sushi too heavy and too creamy in texture.
Our favourite sushi roll among all. Black truffle supposed to be very strong in taste but it still won't overpower the taste of fresh prawn. The truffle paste and prawn paste mashed together creating a heavenly interesting mushroom seafood taste.
I am always a big fan of soft shell crab but this one is just not as crispy as I was expecting. Wondering if the crab was left out too long before it was served? The battered shell was quite soggy already. The avocado taste was really subtle while we still wish the crab could be crunchier. Again, for a budget $78, you will get 4 huge pieces of rolls.
The best skewer we had from the restaurant, the minced chicken contains some small broken pieces of chicken soft bones. The somewhat crunchy skewer complimented perfectly with the savory seasoned egg yolk 'sauce'.
As an egg lover (mainly for its protein value) , I couldn't help but keep the rest of the egg for other dishes like the rest of the salad and my ox tongue which I will introduce shortly.
Down: Shrimp Rolled with Shiso Leaves & Chicken Skin ($38) - we weren't too impressed with this dish since we found nothing special about it though the taste was still good. It was more like a crispy prawn spring roll with herbs to us.
Down: White Eel ($58) - Instead, the white eel was soft and perfectly cooked to our liking. It was very moist and juicy inside, along with the same black pepper seasoning. You also don't have to worry about the fat because white eel is less fatty than the usual Chinese ones from the wet market.
If you have read other reviews from this restaurant, you would have known that they nailed their ox tongue. With no exceptions, our ox tongue was also super tender. I haven't had such a soft ox tongue for a very long time. The bean paste was a bit sweet and savory at the same time. I myself prefer having it as it is as I am not a big fan of sweet things as you may know.
Codfish roe, a.k.a. mentaiko, is one of my favourite delicacies from Japan. This dish reminded me of my quick trip to Fukuoka earlier than year, where Fukuoka is famous for their seafood especially the preserved precious mentaiko.
The mentaiko was grilled lightly from outside and you may see the middle was still raw and fresh. Since mentaiko is very savory, matching with crispy cucumber could never go wrong. The refreshing taste from the cucumber balanced out the high savoriness from the mentaiko, making it a unstoppable dish to enjoy.
Lastly, we have to had some desserts even though we were stuffed. We have chosen the comparatively light fruity strawberry sorbet. The sorbet was filled inside some big frozen strawberries. It was a refreshing dessert to have and I felt like I can go back to try some more dishes, but we have decided to finish our meal here with a perfect fullstop. And yes, we will be back again!
