Whenever I go to Taipei, it seems like part of the time is spent eating at one of the many late night markets. The mix of noisy crowds, deliciious food and blinding lights makes one feel like you've entered into a hallucinogenic world. There are many places in Hong Kong that serve Taiwanese food. And most of the are not that good.

Yuan is Here is something I wanted to go try. I had seen some pretty good looking food photos on OpenRice and boyfriend and I came here on a Wednesday afternoon. Though we came on a weekday afternoon, it was pretty busy. Seats were 90% full and customers continued to come in even after we left. I heard that on a weekend, there are long queues waiting for a table.

Located in Sai Ying Pun, it's a very small restaurant. You can't really miss it. It's got a bunch of signs on the front in Chinese.

The inside of the restaurant looks like some night market in Taipei. Don't expect the place to have comfortable seating. It's cramped and you sit on stools and small tables much like you would if you were sitting on the street. Service is quick but friendly. Menu is basically a slip of paper and you are given a pen to mark off what you want. Though they give you a Chinese menu, there is an English one upon request. There are some items that are only available after 2:30 PM.

Bubble Milk Tea ($10 + $3 for tapioca pearls) and Wintermelon Tea ($10). How can you not go to a Taiwanese restaurant without trying their bubble milk tea? I ordered the bubble milk tea which is the one in the front. Milk tea costs $10 but add $3 for tapioca pearls. The milk tea was pretty good. Sweet enough without being overly sweet. Tea was fragrant. Tapioca pearls were chewy and not too hard. Boyfriend ordered wintermlon tea which is his favorite Taiwanese drink. His drink is in the back. As he didn't add tapioca pearls, it was only $10. He said it tasted pretty good.

Salt and Pepper Chicken ($27). We ordered this as an appetizer. It came with fried basil leaves which were also flavored with salt and pepper. This was perhaps the best I've ever had in Hong Kong. The chicken was flavored perfectly. The coating wasn't too salty and crispy. The meat was moist. This would go great with a beer.

Minced Pork Rice ($35). When this came, the waiter told us we could add more sauce if we didn't have enough. At first we thought we would need more sauce as whenever we order this in Hong Kong, they are always stingy on the sauce and I end up eating flavorless rice after I finish the sauce bits. But it wasn't needed here. There was a lot of sauce so all the rice was coated. We shared this and got two bowls of rice out of it. Pretty decent portion size. The pork wasn't dry. Sauce was sweet. Two pickled daikon were also given to balance out the sweetness.

Oyster Omelette ($35). This is one of the items only available after 2:30 PM. We had arrived a bit before 2:30 PM so when the time came, a waiter walked around announcing this item was now available and who wanted one. Several people including us asked for one. It arrived with a cute smiley face drawn on the sauce. The sauce was a bit sweet. The omelette included tiny oysters and tapioca starch strands. It was ok though I prefer the Chiu Chow style more. But that's my preference as I don't like the tapioca starch strands. Oysters weren't that many. Though fresh, there was also still some sand in them.

No service charge. Good tasting food. Effecient service. Fairly inexpensive food. The whole thing came out to $120. Now I know why this place is popular. I will be back.
