Taking the tram to Causeway Bay for groceries, I noticed a new cake shop called 有間本舖 (English name: You Jiang Hand Made Cake). Recently, Hong Kong has seen a number of such cake shops selling Taiwanese castella cakes. Some of them with extremely long lines of people waiting for the cakes to come out fresh from the oven. Like many of the other shops, this one is take away only with a kitchen in the back making fresh cakes at timely intervals. These are listed at the front of the shop.
They offer four variety of cakes including original flavor. Menu is in English and Chinese. When I was there, they only had cheese and honey/cranberry. I wanted original but it was still baking. So, I decided to just get the honey/cranberry ($75).
It was packaged in a cardboard box that was fairly sturdy despite the heftiness of the cake. They gave me a plastic bag but honestly, you don't need it as the box held together well.
The cake was a decent size.
It was high and fluffy. Soft with a nice eggy taste sweetened by honey. There was a few cranberries sprinkled throughtout but I wish there were more. The cake even kept well in the fridge over night when I shared it with everyone at work.
