Boyfriend, his mother and I decided to sit down for dinner near his residential area. Tao Heung's Pier 88 seemed like a viable option so we came here. There's always some sort of deal going on with this chain of restaurants. Usually a special deal on a fish or chicken dish. Something that is good enough for a simple family meal that doesn't always have to be for a special day.On this day, they had something very surprising. A slab of roast suckling pig for $68. On this day, they had something very surprising. A slab of roast suckling pig for $68. But if they cut it for you, it costs$88. So, we chose to cut it ourselves and they gave us a slab of meat and kitchen scissors and gloves. Boyfriend slapped the gloves on and started to hack away. Pretty awesome!
The pig also came with a steamed dish of sweet cake instead of the usual bao or thin wrapping. The cake was ok but I thought it didn't really compliment the pork very well. It was better on it's own. The pig was great. Skin was crispy. It was not overly salty. Meat was moist. We even had leftovers for boyfriend to take home with him. And as we left the restaurant, we saw that every single table had ordered this, too!
We also added a special dish of the month. A braised winter melon with poached chicken for $78. The winter melon was great but the chicken was a bit tough. The promotional picture had what appeared to be half a chicken but when it arrived, it looked like it was only a quarter.
We also added a sweet and sour pork and bowl of double boiled soup for his mother. All were fairly good and not expensive at all.
Food was ok but excellent value for money on the roast suckling pig. Definitely didn't expect to have that for dinner. And it was easy to cut as well.
