We went there for my birthday dinner tonight. It was such a disappointment. We booked a table for 6, but when we got there, they gave us a table for 10. We requested a smaller table, but they insisted it was the only table available. But then don't people pre-arrange seatings for clients who've made reservations? Anyway, so we sat down and tried to converse screaming over the table. A waitress came to put down the menus, but when we asked her about a smaller table again, she left WITH THE
We booked a table for 6, but when we got there, they gave us a table for 10. We requested a smaller table, but they insisted it was the only table available. But then don't people pre-arrange seatings for clients who've made reservations? Anyway, so we sat down and tried to converse screaming over the table. A waitress came to put down the menus, but when we asked her about a smaller table again, she left WITH THE MENUS to check, and we were left sitting having nothing to do. We eventually had to get up and find the menus ourselves (?!).
So we ordered the tea and a glass of orange juice. They got us the tea and forgot about the OJ. We reminded them again, and it took them a while to get it. AND it turned out they had no fresh OJ!! surprise surprise. We ordered our food and waited and waited. No snacks whatsoever to munch on while waiting at all. Ok so we assumed they're just being nice, not wanting to charge us for snacks that we might not want to eat. No big deal. Then the waitress came to say they had no more 琵琶豆腐(stuffed tofu). It was not even 8pm and they ran out of tofu already?? She showed no interest in apologizing or recommending another dish. She just came to "announce" the news and left. Great.
The food was okay. We ordered:
-Honey roasted BBQ pork with jellyfish
-Soup of the day
-String beans
-Steamed Garoupa
-Stir-fried flat rice noodles with beef
-Scallops in XO sauce
-Spicy diced chicken
The garoupa was the best. Soup was good too. Portions were not big at all... given HOW MUCH they charged.
So the service was poor, food was okay, price was WAY too high, and the environment... it was renovated, but the table linens, the turning plate, the chair covers... oh gosh... they were stained and just not presentable. I just don't think it's the decor that matters, but the smaller details. I mean, when you sit down, the things that you directly use and touch give you the most direct impression of how the place is. ZEN just didn't feel classy to me at all.
We could have had the same quality of food and better service for a much better price at 泉章居or 稻香. But since it was a birthday dinner organized by my lovely family, I still had a blast. Of course! We had so much to laugh about during the meal!
