Camper's is one of the popular lunch spots around Quarry Bay for people who work around here. You have to get here early to get seats or risk having to wait during your precious lunch time. I came here with 4 other colleagues before 12:30pm and we still had to wait a while before being seated. The restaurant itself was not that big with around 5 to 6 tables which seats roughly 20 people at a time. The restaurant itself was not that big with around 5 to 6 tables which seats roughly 20 people at a time. As I take a look at the menu, I noticed a short intro in the back which explains the concept of Camper's - which is to serve wholesome Japanese food with no additives, more vegetables, and minimal fat. As I look around the restaurants, I noticed camping decor hung on the walls which I guess is to express their concept of being close to nature (be natural?).

The menu was all in chinese and there were 3 main categories to choose from: curry, rice, or noodle/udon. Each lunch set comes with free hot or cold tea or you can add $5 for orange or appe juice. Leaving before 12:45pm will give you a 10% discount.

Between the 5 of us we shared the following:

1) Curry A - Curry vegetables with pumpkin rice ($58) - This dish certainly feels healthy as it is all veggies which includes cauliflower, eggplant, bell peppers, etc. Unfortunately I'm a meat kinda person so I did not enjoy this dish at all. The curry also tasted like the kind I can buy from the supermarket and cook myself. The rice is nicely flavored though.

2) Curry C - Curry beef short rib with pumpkin rice ($62) - The beef short rib was a bit tough to chew and most of the flavor is masked by the curry. Same issue with the curry as the above as I was not impressed by the flavor of the curry.

3) Noodle/Udon A - Udon with beef and half-cooked egg ($65) - worst dish of the day. The beef was fatty and flavorless. It taste like frozen beef. The egg was cooked thoroughly so the yolk was not liquid enough. The broth was bland and fatty due to the beef. The udon was just alright.

4) Noodle/Udon B - Ramen with 7 hour slow-cooked soft bone pork ($67) - The pork itself was good as the texture was soft and there is finally some flavor in the food here. It is slightly sweet and tangy. The ramen and broth were just average.

5) Rice B - 7 hour slow-cooked soft bone pork ($64) - This is the same pork as the above but served with rice. The pork here is even more flavorful - probably because it was not sitting in broth which diluted some of the flavor away. Out of all the dishes we tried, this was my favorite.

I appreciate the concept of serving good old wholesome food with no additives, but I think that in going down that route, they ended serving food that certainly tasted homemade for the wrong reasons - because the flavor was so bland and the ingredients were mediocre.
