suppose one would appreciate this place only when you have reached a certain age and have seen it all..the "almost nothing" interior brings comfort to the eye. lighting is brighter than most modern jap rest, but i price that for an eaiser reading of the menu. The daily freshies are also nicely introduced on a supernormal piece of plastic laminated A4 sheet - e.g. 池魚, 秋刀(wait for autumn), 左口, etc. nothing fancy really.
It has the right location, the best street corner along ashley road.
At the entrance, the long and steep run of steps is very old fashioned japanese, inconvenient actually, but transcends you as you walk up, elevating you away from the chaos of tst and prepare you for an hour of two of subtle, no-nonsense japanese food and drink.
good for a quiet party of 2-3 while observiing the red-face/heated-discussion of familiar japanese customers on the next table.
