Made a reservation, but when my friend and I arrived, they only had the table right at the door for us, so the waitress kindly offered to take us to the "other room"... so we followed up a few steps up Graham street, and lo and behold! There is another alley way with a traditional Chinese door which opened up to a very red room, complete with tree, lanterns, chinese music, the works. There was only one other couple there, and we took a nice comfy table for 4 (the whole room was only set out for
They served us chrysanthemum tea, and I never tire of watching the tightly wrapped flower unfold in the glass of hot water. There were 3 appetizers, potato, mushrooms and cabbage, very appetizing and just the right amount of spice. We ordered a vegetarian lettuce wrap, a de-bone chicken named after the chinese general zuo, stir fried spicy bitter melon, tan tan soup noodle, and a crab meat soup in whole pumpkin. (Now that i type everything out, i suddenly reaslied that was quite a lot of food for 2 girls only, haha).
The lettuce wrap was not spicy and came with hoi sin sauce, the lettuce were big slices, so no fiddling around and trying to contain a minute amount of filling as with the very small pieces of lettuce. The chicken was spicy, and deep fried in a thin batter, the chicken was ok but not much chicken taste to it (probably frozen fillet). The bitter melon was very well done, dry and retaining the texture (some places overcook it and make it soggy). The tan tan noodle was ok, not too spicy, with a nice peanut flavour that did not overwhelm the whole dish. But my favourite was the crab meat pumpkin soup, the portion is enough for 2 to share, and the pumpkin was very tender, sweet and delicious. The skin was very thin, and you could eat the entire pumpkin... yummm....
The food is cooked in the main shop and is brought over, all covered properly along the way. The service was attentive without being intrusive, the tea refilled regularly, and the waitress automatically replaced our dirty dishes or wet napkins appropriately.
Although one could fine loads of cheaper and possibly nicer sichuan food in town, I liked this place for the combination of good food and the great ambience, and dinner for 2 at $517 is acceptable.
