When I saw this listed as a new opening on OpenRice, I thought it was just some upstairs cafe that just ripped off the original Animate Cafe in Tokyo. But then my coworker went and she said it was an official Animate Cafe run by Animate, so I had to go! Animate, for those that aren't familiar, is a super huge store that sells manga and their related material in Japan and around the world through their online store. They even have a branch in Hong Kong in the Mong Gok area (and later I found in Y
Originally, boyfriend and I were going to wait until they changed the manga theme as we weren't familiar with the current one. But then we were browsing the Animate store and it said it's last day was July 30th after extending the closing date an extra month. We then found out that we had to book a time slot only through Table Map. So, this was also my first time using this service as well. Table Map was easy to use. I filled out some information, chose a time slot (7:30 pm to 9 pm) and an SMS was sent to me to submit the confirmation code. A day before my reservation date, another SMS was given to me to remind me of the booking and to arrive 15 minutes before our allotted time slot. Quite easy.
We arrived and were told to wait until our time slot was open for service. So, we waited with a huge group of girls excitedly waiting to get in. At exactly 7:30, a wait staff led us into the cafe. The cafe was small and all the walls were decorated with posters of the current manga theme which was Uta no Prince-sama. Both boyfriend and I weren't familiar with this manga and later I found out that it was actually a video game geared towards girls that later spawned into a manga and anime series. The basic plot is about a girl who goes to a music academy to become a music idol. She then goes through adventures and romance (as it seems everyone at her school seem to be boys) on her way to music stardom. The cafe constantly played music from the anime. The customers all took selfies of themselves with the posters of the male characters. The cafe also had a small gift shop to buy items from the manga and many of the customers were buying things.
All in all, it was fun. The food was ok as it was Satay King. Not great. Not bad. At least edible. Fan gifts could have been better.
