When I saw this listed as a new opening on OpenRice, I thought it was just some upstairs cafe that just ripped off the original Animate Cafe in Tokyo. When I saw this listed as a new opening on OpenRice, I thought it was just some upstairs cafe that just ripped off the original Animate Cafe in Tokyo. But then my coworker went and she said it was an official Animate Cafe run by Animate, so I had to go! Animate, for those that aren't familiar, is a super huge store that sells manga and their related material in Japan and around the world through their online store. They even have a branch in Hong Kong in the Mong Gok area (and later I found in Yuen Long). In Tokyo, they have a cafe that changes it's manga theme periodically so fans of a certain manga or anime can eat there and buy fan based items.

Originally, boyfriend and I were going to wait until they changed the manga theme as we weren't familiar with the current one. But then we were browsing the Animate store and it said it's last day was July 30th after extending the closing date an extra month. We then found out that we had to book a time slot only through Table Map. So, this was also my first time using this service as well. Table Map was easy to use. I filled out some information, chose a time slot (7:30 pm to 9 pm) and an SMS was sent to me to submit the confirmation code. A day before my reservation date, another SMS was given to me to remind me of the booking and to arrive 15 minutes before our allotted time slot. Quite easy.

We arrived and were told to wait until our time slot was open for service. So, we waited with a huge group of girls excitedly waiting to get in. At exactly 7:30, a wait staff led us into the cafe. The cafe was small and all the walls were decorated with posters of the current manga theme which was Uta no Prince-sama. Both boyfriend and I weren't familiar with this manga and later I found out that it was actually a video game geared towards girls that later spawned into a manga and anime series. The basic plot is about a girl who goes to a music academy to become a music idol. She then goes through adventures and romance (as it seems everyone at her school seem to be boys) on her way to music stardom. The cafe constantly played music from the anime. The customers all took selfies of themselves with the posters of the male characters. The cafe also had a small gift shop to buy items from the manga and many of the customers were buying things.

We were given a menu and told that every customer had to order one drink and one main dish or dessert. We were ensured a token would be given for each item ordered for a gift draw. If we ordered a drink, main and dessert, we would be given and extra token for a special gift. Boyfriend and I only ordered a main and drink each. We weren't too thrilled over the dessert selection and we weren't fans of this manga anyways. Then boyfriend looked around and noticed he was the only guy in the entire cafe. Every table was full in the cafe and everyone was female. Boyfriend even noticed that the only washroom in the cafe was females only. Men had to go downstairs to Satay King.

Boyfriend ordered pineapple drink. It tasted like canned pineapple juice with soda and it was blue. I ordered a blackcurrent dink. It tasted like Ribena with soda and it was red.

I ordred a seafood pasta. There was a rumor that this cafe's food was served by Satay King. The actual cafe is inside the Satay King building. So, when the food arrived, served in a Satay King plate, it pretty much confirmed it. So, basically, tasted like your typical cha chan teng pasta.

Boyfriend ordered the curry rice. Orignally, he felt he should order the omurice as it's what most otaku cafes should serve, but after he saw it was Satay King food, he said "curry is what they do best", so he ordered that to be on the safe side.

After we finished eating, we had four tokens to draw four gifts. At one corner of the cafe, was a place to get our gifts.

What we got were pretty lame. Paper coasters and paper placemats. Pretty cheap as they could have used these as actual placemats and coasters for the cafe instead of having you win them to take them away. Do they do this in Japan's Animate Cafe? I would like to know? They could have given away things like buttons or stickers. Even a bookmark would have been nice. To me, this was pretty weak.

At the end of our allotted time slot, everyone played a game. We lifted up one of three colored cards. If it matched the color ball the staff held up, that person won a free drink voucher for use next time. But the staff stressed they had to use it by July 30.

There was a suggestion box asking what the next manga them should be. Does this mean it is REALLY closed on July 30 or will it change themes? Because from what I saw, it was pretty popular. The cafe was full and as we left, we saw another line of girls waiting to get in. All on a weekday.

All in all, it was fun. The food was ok as it was Satay King. Not great. Not bad. At least edible. Fan gifts could have been better.
