Growing up in Canada, I always had what I thought was authentic Japanese. That was until I moved here and actually went to Japan where I learned what I had was not Japanese at all but a Westernized idea of it. Just like the food in Chinatown. But I still liked it. Especially the inventive creative rolls. Little did I know ... there was a place in Hong Kong that serves that style of Japanese! The place? 古今 (English name: Kokon). The place? 古今 (English name: Kokon). Located in Causeway Bay, I had not heard of this place until boyfriend mentioned it. We decided to give it a try. Almost everyone had reserved a table! It was that busy! We were lucky to get one of the last remaining walk-in tables.
The restaurant is narrow but it oddly didn't feel too cramped.
Menu is in English and Chinese. They have a menu with photos of all the food. But you order by checking off this piece of paper. They have all the usual Japanese style dishes from sushi to yakitori. You name it, they probably have it.
We started with yakitori. This is the Teriyaki Chicken Skewers ($20 for two skewers). The chicken was soft and tender. The sauce was sweet and sticky.
Handmade Chicken and Mushroom Balls ($32) were pretty good. A nice dispersion of soft bones to give it a crunchy texture. A bit of pepper was added to give it a kick. The balls were soft and fluffy.
The thing to order at this place is the creative rolls. It's these rolls that remind me of childhood. We chose two kinds.
One was the Super Crazy Roll ($93). Eel, tempura shrimp, cream cheese, cucumber, chips. Yes, chips as in potato chips. It seemed ... crazy. But it worked. The cheese was great with the tempura shrimp. The chips gave it a salty cruncy texture. The eel was soft. And the cucumber gave it freshness.
The other roll was the Spider Roll ($93). Soft shell crab, cucumber, avocado, crab fillet. The soft shell crab was reallycrisp. It went well against the softness of the avocado. The crab fillet was sweet.
We finished the dinner with a Salmon Fried Rice ($128). Lots of salmon meat along with random diced vegetables was found throughtout. The rice was not too oily and well seasoned. What surprised me was the pickles on the plate. Eating with the rice made it even more appetizing.
Always interesting to eat Japanese that reminded me of the ones in Canada. Brought back memories.
