Steak Frites. A classic French dish of just a steak and fries. There are several places that serve this here in Hong Kong. Moo Moo's is now the new kid on the block with the classic but they also say ... they've changed it up! Modernized it. That's what they said in a magazine. So, I decided to see for myself. I came here for lunch before heading for a busy evening of work. The decor was classy looking complete with pseudo fireplace. For lunch, the place started to fill up quickly.
They hae only one menu. A steak frites set that includes bread, salad, steak, all you can eat fries and a coffee or tea for $298. You can add a wine for a special price and dessert afterwards if you still have room after all those fries! Menu is in English only. Staff also only speak English.
Instead of the usual steak knife, they give you a mini meat cleaver. It was super cute and you can ever buy one to keep. It's this mini meat cleaver that attracte me and it appears from the other diners who were mostly girls also thought the same thing.
The set comes with a toasty sweet dinner bun. You get a spread of cinnamon and butter. The wait staff suggested to add a bit of salt to make it taste even better. I love the cinnamon spread. It was having an instant cinnamon roll!
The salad was nice looking with a soft yolky egg. The lettuce was crisp. There were bacon bits and croutons to give it a bit of saltiness. The dressing was just enough.
Then came the steak. It was wow .. big! The pile of fries were a lot, too! And super crispy though not seasoned.
You get three gravies to dip into. The top is red pepper. Left is onion. Right is black pepper. The red pepper one was spicy! The black pepper was fine. But my favorite? The onion. Rich and savory. I think it went with the steak the best.
For the steak, I asked for a medium rare and got exactly that. The steak was juicy and tender. Perfectly seasoned though the fat wasn't rendered enough.
Over all, quite good deal. Service was really excellent and food came out quickly so I was able to head to work in a timely manner. Did the modernize the classic? Perhaps from the use of the cinnamon spread instead of butter and the different gravies instead of the just one. And the meat cleaver? Cute as anything. Would be back.
