My friend and I had wanted to lunch at Tim Ho Wan (actually we only like the baked BBQ pork bun, other items are just so-so) but there was a surprisingly long queue (usually a 10mins wait for two at the North Point branch). My friend and I had wanted to lunch at Tim Ho Wan (actually we only like the baked BBQ pork bun, other items are just so-so) but there was a surprisingly long queue (usually a 10mins wait for two at the North Point branch). To our horror, the wait would be 30mins. We took a ticket and walked around. DONKA was just a short distance away and it looked empty inside aside from 3 other customers. We had a look at the menu which was clean and neat (in Chinese and English). The owner (?) came out to greet us and recommended a couple dishes including one that they have entered for competitions, udon with crab meat and pork in crab sauce. Since the shop runs a daily special, with this dish on Tues, we made a note to come back for it next time, if the food is good.

So we gave in to the owner's charms and stepping in the small shop for a table for two. First impression, the interiors look really clean and neat (errr I said this about the menu earlier). We took a quick glance at the menu and picked a main each and two grilled skewers to share. We also ordered a set with appetiser, soup, and white rice for $38 extra.

First to arrive was the appetiser which is a plate of stirred fried mixed vegetables with little (or no) oil and no salt added. It tasted so bland but in a healthy way.

Next to arrive were the skewer sticks and soup (that came with the set). It was tomato soup with bits of onions and tomato. Tasted alright I had thought. The skewers however were slightly disappointing. The black pork was too lean and dry. I had the black pork in Jeju in my travel last year and that's so fatty and well perhaps I came with expectations. The beef was was better but lean also; chunky and topped with heaps of green onions. I think the chef should have eased off on the salt and pepper.

The vege soup that came with the udon was really mild in taste. And another super healthy dish with large cubes of vegetables. I really liked this as it offers a good contrast to the over-seasoning from the skewers. This dish was the special so nearly 50% off. I wouldnt pay full price for this however.
Beef rib fingers in black sugar wine sauce

The second main we ordered was beef rib fingers in black sugar wine sauce. This was the bomb! The sauce was too sweet for my liking. The beef was so tender and succulent. And there were 5 large pieces of beef! We couldnt finish the rice as there was so much meat. There was a boiled egg on top but the yolk was a little too cooked. A very good dish at $88 and will return for this.

Overall, I absolutely enjoyed the meal. The weak seasoning in the vege dishes drew out the natural flavours of the vegetables, and complemented the heavier and meat dishes. The wait staff could however benefit from better training though.
