My crew and I were looking for a chilled place in WC for happy hour on Friday night. Got drawn by the music into this alley Swatow Street, hidden was a little gem called Bread & Beast. The friendly staff saw us spoofing around outside and approached us to give us an intro to the place. My crew and I were looking for a chilled place in WC for happy hour on Friday night. Got drawn by the music into this alley Swatow Street, hidden was a little gem called Bread & Beast. The friendly staff saw us spoofing around outside and approached us to give us an intro to the place. We thought it was a new joint, couldn't believe it had been around for over a year and we never heard about it. Anyways, we tried their new bar snack menu and their collaborative beer with Hitachino - the Drunken Rooster, which was impressively on point. The Beast Fried Chicken (B.F.C.) which was paired with a homemade ginger scallion aioli, sweet soy and chili sauce, was an ingenious play on the Hainanese style chicken sauce. The next dish Lap Cherng Mac & Cheese was similarly brilliant. Rather than using bacon, the chef adopted a more local ingredient Lap Cherng, which imbued a familiar sweetness that cuts through the richness of the cheese. We also had the Southern Fried Tiger Prawns and Crispy Brussels Sprouts, all on point. The highlight of the night though was definitely the churros. Gosh I'm a sucker for churros, but haven't had many good experiences in HK. Glad I gave this a try, this one definitely delivered. Crunchy on the outside, piping hot in the inside, dusted with cinnamon sugar and drizzled with nutella. Decadent but not overly. The band which was the initial reason we came by was another bright spot. Music and vibe no doubt play a big role in the dine in experience. The band, though not exceptionally virtuoso, was nevertheless a joy as they more than compensated with their passion and showmanship. The band was supposed to end at 9pm but upon guests' repeated requests for encore, they ended up jamming till 9:30pm. We stayed behind and allowed ourselves to enjoy a couple more locally brewed craft beer on draught. We peaced out, slightly tipsy, rather sensually fulfilled, and very satisfied.
