I'm often wary of going to what expats like to call the dark side of Hong Kong for Japanese. Mainly due to the fact that I know it won't be authentic. It'll be some strange hybrid calling itself Japanese. But boyfriend suggested dining here and before we could change our mind, it started to rain heavily so we went int. 阿堂魚湯 (English name: Ar Tong Fish Broth) is located in Prince Edward. 阿堂魚湯 (English name: Ar Tong Fish Broth) is located in Prince Edward. It's a small restaurant serving up Japanese meals with their signature item a fish soup udon. A la carte is in English and Chinese. But afternoon tea and lunch menu (which a super cheap deal) is in Chinese only. There is no 10% service charge and you pay on your way out.
I had the udon with the fish soup that was under the lunch set menu ($48). There was a lot of slices of fish throughout the bowl. Portions for the udon was a lot as well. The broth tasted like the Chinese fish soup which I did like. It was pretty rich without being too fishy.
Boyfriend ordered the pork chop from the tea set menu ($38). This was huge! It was very crunchy but the meat was a bit salty. There was also a side of salad. He upgraded to change the vermicelli to udon but they used the same fish soup base.
Not authentic Japanese but I wasn't expecting that here. Portions were generous and for this price, a really good deal. Taste was pretty good as well.
