We heard about JANG for quite some time and finally got a chance to visit for a business dinner last week. A lot of friends have been talking about this new hip Korean place in L Place so we were excited to pay a visit. We made a booking ahead of time and managed to book the entire private VIP area for a group of 10 people. The receptionist was extremely polite and had the booking spot on. The drinks menu was well designed and offered a good mix of traditional Korean drinks (Soju, Magulli etc) and soju cocktails. I decided to stick with Magulli but some people in our group ordered the Pink Collins and Kiss, both of which they said were very good.
Now on to the food.
Appetiser (side dishes) :
- The side dishes are complementary at JANG, which is similar to other Korean restaurants in Hong Kong. The key difference is that the presentation is very nice and colourful, which is a refreshing change from the other places.
Starter
- Chicken Salad with Spicy Sauce: we heard this is a must-try here and for this, and can't agree more. The chicken was very crispy yet not too hard to chew on. The sauce was just right too. It was a very nice experiment of the chef to combine a Korean. Highly recommend this dish.
- Crispy Beef Salad : this dish was very good as well. Similar to the chicken salad.
Main
- LA Gal Bi : one of the the best thing about JANG is that they cook all the BBQ dishes inside the kitchen, which means you can avoid smelling like BBQ after your meal. But the guys here did a great job to maintain flavor in the meat by serving the Gal Bi on a sizzling plate. The meat is served with mushroom and asparagus, both of which went very well with the galbi.
- Ga Ja Mi (sole fish) : this was a new dish, which is usually not found in Korean restaurants. It is similar to sweet and sour fish in a Chinese restaurant but with a Korean touch to it and using sole fish. The fish was very tender, not fishy at all and very flavory.
- Jap Chae : You can't go wrong by ordering this dish. This is a signature dish we had to order. The Jap Chae here is good and it is not hard to realise that JANG does a good job with traditional Korean dishes as well.
- Seafood Pancake : same feedback as Jap Chae. Very crispy and good.
Desert
- Rice Cake : this was definitely one of the highlights of the night. I would just come back for the desert.
Towards the end of the night, the manager served us some soju guava shots on the house.
The price turned out to be around $500 per head but considering the amount of food and drinks we had, this was money well spent. It was definitely better value for money compared to other high end restaurants in Central.
Overall, the service was excellent and we would definitely come back here even if it's for a casual drink.
