I went to El Mercado not knowing what to expect, I'd never ate 'peruvian' cuisine previous to my El Mercado experience, however, to my delight I really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere that El Mercado had on offer. To begin with I ordered an array of different entrée's including Ika Cevichi and scallop tiradito which were all superbly different from one another, with each dish presenting their own unique presentations and flavours. The Ika Ceviche includes seabass, sweet potato and calamri rings in 'leche de tigre', which is a sauce that is so strong in citric acids that is actually cooks the seabass - as explained to me by the attentive staff and head chef. Amongst all this however I will say that the "crispy calamari rings" that are included in the Ika Ceviche could be improved as the batter was slightly floury, but this was to no detriment to the entrée as it was still fanstastic.
As a main I shared a Brazilian Picanha with Grilled Avocado as a side dish. To accompany this meal I had a Pisco Sour cocktail prepared by the friendly barmen Manuel. The Pisco Sour has an unforgettably strong flavour that in hindsight wasn't the best choice for lunch time but nevertheless was still very enjoyable. The Picanha is a popular brazilian cut of steak that comes from the back of the cow and is cut, cooked and served with thick fat remaining on it, presenting the difference between picanha and rump and giving it the succulent tenderness and salty flavours. The Grilled Avocado was also exceptional, despite the fact I am not a big avocado lover, I still thoroughly enjoyed it and it paired with the Picanha beautifully.
Unfortunately I was not able to try any of the desserts on offer from El Mercado as my appetite was completely satisfied from the earlier dishes, however it will be an experience im looking forward to in the near future.
