Today I decided to go more local and headed to this restaurant in Yan Oi Street in search for dumplings/buns. There are no English reviews for this place (that is, until now) so I chose to try this one based on pictures and rating.First of all let me say it is quite easy to find the place, just take a look at the pictures of the restaurant entrance and you cannot miss it. Moreover, it is right next to a Circle K. You enter the place and well, it's the local style, you find a spot in some table,
First of all let me say it is quite easy to find the place, just take a look at the pictures of the restaurant entrance and you cannot miss it. Moreover, it is right next to a Circle K.
You enter the place and well, it's the local style, you find a spot in some table, sit down, take a look at the menu, raise your hand, order, get the food, get the bill, eat, take the bill to the cashier, pay and go. I went early so it was not crowded but there was a lively atmosphere
The first good news is that they have a menu with every item in Chinese and English (and with descriptions that are easily understood). So I ordered:
1 Fried Dumpling with pork filling - 7/10
1 Fried Beef Bun - 5/10
1 Fried Pork Bun -- However they were sold out
1 Steamed Bun with Egg-Yellow (hahaha, I guess they mean Yolk) - 2/10
1 Crisp Cake with Sesame & Scallion - 7/10
1 pc Deep fried Pork Chop - 3/10
1 Soy Milk - 6/10
Fresh and OK.
VALUE FOR MONEY - 6/10
All together was 31HKD, which is a good price for a local lunch. Also I got to sample many different dishes without having to pay more. The value for money would be much higher if the buns and fried pork had the same quality as the pork dumpling or the sesame cake.
GWAILO FRIENDLY RATING - 6/10
Local place with a complete English menu, that is about as easy as it is going to get!!! Of course waitress spoke 0 English and I had to sort some Q&A with my basic Canto... In any case, it is perfectly possible to order, eat and pay with no Chinese knowledge at all.
CONCLUSION - 5/10
I guess this is the kind of place where you need to know what to order. They have some nice things and some quite bad ones, so I guess it is a matter of either following the reviews or going yourself and test. In any case, I do believe there must be spots with better dumplings around here, I just need to find it!!! So I will keep you all posted.
